He's an indoor cat, about 3.5 years. His poops looks fine - normal shape an consistency, but the past 2 days he has been constantly licking his butt. I don't really want to make an unnecessary trip to the vet if I don't have to - any thoughts?

There are a few things I don't know that are important for me to answer, so I'll give you some info overload. When he's in the litter box, does he strain to urinate or cry while he's trying? Does his belly feel hard? Is he lethargic at all? Is he still eating and drinking properly? Is he squatting around your house at all? If your cat has any of the above symptoms, take him to the vet IMMEDIATELY! He could potentially have a urinary tract infection or if he's prone to producing crystals in his urine he could be blocked (if he's blocked it's an extreme emergency). Another thing that could have happened is his anal glands may be full or infected. These need to be expressed by a professional and you'll probably have to give your cat some kind of antibiotics. Always remember: It's considered an EMERGENCY if your cat stops eating, drinking and going to the bathroom. Please take him in and get him checked. Good luck.

lunarky above has a very good point... I had a cat that licked his little penis and bum a lot and I found out that he had blockage in his urinary track.

He suddenly discovered the flavor of anus appeals to him even more during the winter months.
