I find it appalling that anyone would make anybody draw God. For some in many religions, this alone would be sacrilege in itself. For those Atheists who don't believe at all, there lies a conflict. It would be like telling a die-hard Christian to draw a rendition of the Big Bang.

No-one should be made to take on board any form of religion until they are old enough to decide for themselves. Any school in any country asking someone to draw a picture of a hypothetical being is ridiculous.
Even the original Christian Church didn't have a picture of god, so they pinched the image of Zeus.
As an athiest I would leave the page blank and say that is what I think god looks like. Let them prove me wrong.

Idea 1) Leave the page blank, and write, I am an atheist. As i don't believe in God, this is my picture of him.
Idea2) You still might have a picture of God in your head, despite not believing in him. After all, you could draw James Bond knowing there's no such person. Drawing a picture of something doesn't mean saying it exists.

I don't know what the laws are like in the UK. I suppose, since they have the Church of England then perhaps they are less protective against this sort of thing. Here in the USA this behavior is prohibited and any teacher that did such a thing would be justifiably punished for it.

Well, where were you? If you were in a public school, then I would hope they told their parents, who subsequently sued the teacher that forced their children to draw God.
However, if this is a Catholic or Christian school or an art class that you've paid to take, there isn't much you can do (you could leave the art class and demand your money back, but good luck).

well not sure on this one - but only a drawing not a declaration of faith !
no-one living on earth knows what God really looks like - so whats the problem - just any drawing would have done!

I'd probably draw the concept of being an Atheist. i.e on one half I'd draw people praying and on the other half I'd draw me and my values and beliefs.

Just don't draw Mohammed - muslims will smash your windows if you do.
Come to think of it I don't understand your question. An atheist can draw god as well as any religious person so far as its possible - just as both could equally draw faeries and unicorns.
*Oh I see - forced to take part - I don't think its harmful for children to be exposed to religion, if they're smart and have been taught to think for themselves they won't be impressed. If my son said the teacher asked him to draw god i'd say draw your favourite comic book character - if the teacher challenged it - he could say 'prove God doesn't look like that'*

That makes no sense what-so-ever.
I would hand in a blank sheet of paper...that is God.

they should draw a picture of themselves with a little thought bubble over their head...which represents their imagination...which is where god comes from.
