I always find it ironic that the drivers who are the least experienced, get stuck with the quirkiest, occasionally most dangerous cars! If you're lucky, you'll have a caring, wealthy family member who can give you their older, well-maintained car. But if you're not that lucky, go through your local classifieds but please take the car to a mechanic for an honest evaluation. Ask the mechanic if they would let their child drive that car. Please make brakes more important than the stereo system!

look in the local classifieds or the little nickel. in some big cities thay have a $1000 and under column for cars
