it could be any of the answers above, but also could be:
- you're in play mode and not record, picture wont show up until you view recording
- your viewfinder is not pulled out, therefore not focusing a picture.
- battery is flat.
- youre in auto mode and not manual.

Mine is the same, can't get a picture, so just use the viewfinder. Suspect the LCD is faulty.

in the setting the preference is for the little view screen thingy.
what camera, they all are easy to change so that the pref is for LCD

Mine just went really wierd with no picture and just coloured lines, I was was told it was a faulty CCD? I was quoted £115 to repair! I didn't bother!
