Keep your head shaved to avoid head lice. Always wear shower shoes in the bathroom to avoid athlete's foot. Have a large enough sum in your canteen because you can usually receive a lot one time in the beginning. Canteen is usually limited greatly after the first big deposit.
Contact important friends and family members with your ID number, facility information, address and visiting hours. Get your facts straight with how someone can get on your visitors list. Remember that the COs have a job to do and most are unqualified for the job. Learn who is the Unit Manager and other chains of commands, you will need to know later on.

Better stay out of trouble. I was reading about the Los Angeles county jail and it's bad enough there. It's way overcrowded, with people sleeping on the floors in the bathrooms. Some 300 inmates a month come down with Staph infections (a very nasty thing) and also you are exposed to Aids and Hepatitis. And of course there's lots of gangsters in there looking for a fight.

I hear that large federal prisons are better than smaller provincial institutions (or municipal jail). Make sure you commit an offence that has a punishment of over two years so you can get into one of the federal prisons. Also soap on a rope is a good idea.

Pity you didn't think enough of yourself to stay out of dilemma. However, keep your mouth SHUT. TELL NOTHING. You will be pressured to tell EVERYTHING. Then it will be used against you, mainly for whatever you have. Yards are run by bulls and they have 24 hours to figure things out. As for the soap its usually reserve for Baby rapers of course you can always give it up freely if you choose. As for the beating thing believe me you will go to the hole and most likely loose any stat time you have acquired. Keep your act clean, work, library, cards, TV, anything that feels wrong--usually is wrong. Sorry you didn't figure that out long before now.

Although your rights are seriously trimmed, try to keep in touch with your family on the outside. It might be some of the only contact to the outside world for a long time.

I've always been under the impression that on the first day there you either kick someones butt or become their biotch...
I'd make sure to intimidate and pound the daylights out of the first person you see...

If you drop the soap in the shower, don't bend over to pick it up.

Don't do anything that would get you sent there in the first place. If that cannot be avoided, don't take candy bars from big ugly bikers.
