sometimes when we hear lots of paraises of something we build high expectations. when we actually see it we are looking for all the best qualities that a painting, a movie or a book can hold. but since nothing is perfect we feel disapointed. if you will look at it again without any preconcieved notions you will see why people make such "a big deal" about it. i find it great because i see in it a woman with sad eyes but smiling lips. many layers of paints makes it kind of blurd this emphasizes the mysterious, knowing smile of mona lisa. if you will look it that way you will not call it just a painting but instead your mind would be busy in untangling the mystery behind her sad eyes and smiling lips, and what is it that she knows but we dont. this is how i see it thousands of critics have explained her according to their owm perception. try to look at her again not to criticize her but just enjoy her. if you dont like her still its your own choice and every one is entitled to it. best of luck.

The Mona Lisa has had a lot of attention for being stolen a couple of times, the old "no such thing as bad press" may help. Being such a famous painting because of thievery can help the mystique-factor. As an artist I tell people is a compliment if my paintings are sold or stolen. =)

You need to learn more about art and painting to really appreciate it.

It's not really something you can just explain in a few paragraphs. You need to study art history and compare the work to where our world was at the point in time when this work was created.

This masterpiece is definately deserving of all the attention it gets.
