For a college assignment (construction management) we have been asked to find out what plant would be used to create a raft foundation for a basement car park.

My initial thought is concrete mixers and the various pumps and booms used to transport the stuff to the excavation but then I'm strating to think about the concrete reinforcement - what would that need? Crane perhaps? what about cutting equipment?? Aggh!

Answers greatly appreciated :)

Second and third answers are helpful to you,
the missing info is the water proofing membranes and Vapour barriers.
You need to contact a laboratory to make certain tests, for soil compaction, soil protector test , slump test and cube or cylinder tests for RCC.
You have to do a soil investigation test and related water table level as well.

I'm concerned that that guy doesn't know the difference between a pile foundation and a raft foundation.

Your best bet (and best way to learn) would be to go to a local construction site, have a look, and ask some questions!

The plant required really depends on the size of your building - a crane would likely be required for a large multi storied building, however with a smaller structure, an excavator could be used for all the small lifting jobs as well as the initial excavations. It might pay to check how much detail you are expected to go into as well (cutting equipment etc), as there are plenty of items of small plant required on a construction site.

Think it through from start to finish - how would you build it? Starting with an uneven chunk of land...

It will depend on how big is your basement car park is. Big work sites would require tower crane for your lifting and mobility of materials & equipment, excavators, dozers and trucks for earthmoving/excavation, concrete works you'll need concrete mixers, concrete pumps to convey fresh concrete, vibrators etc. Equipment for reinforcing bars fabrication can be done offsite. Depending on the structural design/geotechnical studies, piles would be necessary so you need another plant for this activity. Types of piling equipment will again depend on type of piles to be used.
You may need sheet pile driving equipment if there is a need to protect your excavation. Good luck!

A pile borer. Yes you need 8 ft head room.
After drilling 12-15 Metres deep and 250 mm dia insert a 250
cardboard former 2 Metres in length. All at 2 Metres pitch
Insert four equally spaced 15 - 17 metre 16 mm formed bars.
Back fill with sand shingle cement mix to suit soil conditions
When set level off floor and shutter and bend steel to form pile heads.
12 mm bars at 8" pitch crossed each way to make squares top set 2" below slab surface, bottom set 2" above soil.
Give the soil spec' to Ready Mix to pump in while you level it.
Leave three weeks apply one top finish of choice.
