Well you cud initiate the process/start off wth reading!!!!
Read whatever u could lay ur hands on,might be a classic or a best seller or even a dictionary, but just fall in love wth reading. Once you develop tht habit, things shudnt seem too tough.
Also try using a Thesaurus, it enables you to ameliorate/improve your vocabulary immensely ;))
But then only learning new words would not help until n unless you start utilising them, in speech or in writing.
Hear other people talk, try to fathom words which seem like strangers to ur ears :)
Never ever be ashamed to ask if u cannot understand smething.
Make an habit of making mental notes, whtever u read, learn or hear shud be duly imprinted in ur mind :))
All d best!!!!!!!!!!

Read books about things you're interested in, keeping a dictionary by your side. If you encounter a new word, write it down, with the definition. Try to use the new word several times during the day.
Subscribe to one of the "Word For The Day" services at Merriam Webster Online or Dictionary.com.
When you find a new word, find out where it came from, and how it works. For example, let's say you look up "inflection." Find its etymology, in this case Latin, and look at what the stem means. "Flectere" in Latin means "to bend." Think of some other words that have the same stem: reflect, deflect, flex, etc.
There is much to enjoy in exploring words. Have fun.

Write in a book 5-10 new words a day (it depends on the starting level) all the days of the year. Read them and repeat until you know them. Any 7 days make a general review and restudy those you should have forgot in the meanwhile.
After 5-6 months you'll know abt. 1500 new words and it's a big step; only one recomm.- Don't jump a single day.
In addition (very helpful) read books with a good dictionary with you and search any new term you'll meet with. It's not necessary you read "difficult" books. At the starting will be also ok the books of primary school children.

Apart from reading books & newspapers etc, you must also read & learn from the book by 'Norman Lewis'.It is the best book to improve one's vocabulary step by step.It makes us understand the basic words through which we can derive a lot of other words. It has also lot of excercises through which we can learn what we have read(plus some grammar, confusing words, spellings etc). But you must follow the book sincerely to have its full benefit. I think that it is lot more better to read magazines, newspapers etc & Norman Lewis than to just learn the dictionary.

Be a good listener to some of the really good linguist tutoring programmes.Make list of new words and phrases. Practicse pronounciations , say your newly learned phrases clearly and loudly may it be an odd or suitable hour if you feel you can spend to remember previous learnings, no matter if your wife looks at you making a funny face or a neighbour thinks you a crazy guy.

well, if you didn't speak english first, then you could probably take an esl course...english as a second language...you should also read ...alot and you can pick a random word from the dictionary every day to learn about. you also should just listen to people talk, because then you learn how we pronounce things, but don't necessarily listen to teens, they don't talk right, they skip letters and stuff like that
good luck
