If you are going to compare apples and oranges, do it at equal weights. The calorie content is about 85 for 6 oz (180 g) peeled oranges, 93 for the same weight apple (with skin) and 160 for the same weight peeled banana.
I suggest you don't worry about it. Fruits and nonstarchy vegetables have so much volume that it's hard to eat too many calories. They replace other, often more caloric, foods. My suggestions for weight loss (which must be gradual and minimally obsessive to be healthy):
Fruits/vegetables -- eat as much as you want, and prefer them.
Meats, fowl -- avoid or trim excess fat, watch portion sizes. Don't waste money on skinless fowl, just take off the skin and fry it to melt out most of the fat. Find fish you like and eat it often.
Starches -- minimize, but don't eliminate, as you risk the problems associated with Atkins-ism.
Desserts -- take pride in avoiding them. Do fruit and cheese instead. Sweetness is an addiction to be managed.
Drinks -- water, various teas and coffees, fruit juices in moderation. Nonfat or lowfat milk and buttermilk are fine.
Toppings, sauces and other accompaniments: a minefield of calories. Avoid where possible, stress vegetables where you can. Buy bread good enough to eat by itself or with cheese rather than butter.
Know your numbers: 4 calories per gram of starch, sugar or protein, 9 calories per gram of fat, 7 per gram of alcohol, and 1 or less for fruits/vegetables. Get to know what a gram is: there are about 3 grams in a teaspoon of most stuff or a sheet of paper, and about 30 grams per ounce weight. Even with the numbers, don't count calories all the time but do weigh portions (the original Weight Watchers idea) and weigh yourself often.
Expect opposition from almost everyone -- the dieters will tell you to do it their way, the organic or cholesterol watchers have their particular agendas, others may envy your self-discipline and be reminded of their excesses.
Get pleasure in other ways -- garden (grow food, not just eat it), cook in interesting ways, travel and be curious, fix things at home or work, and get involved with people.
Exercise -- move around whenever possible. If someone asks or expects you to move (fetch something, up or down stairs) be thankful you can do it rather than need it.
And don't try to be too thin. That's no good either.

Depending on the size, an apple has about 80 cal, not sure about an orange. It's mostly sugar, but they are so full of nutrients. Fruit is good for you, much better than eating 80 calories of rice cake.
