Probably a lot of people did. But the fact is, it was not illegal at that time. The whole big deal about prohibition of drugs started not long after prohibition was removed from alcohol. Had to find something for all those federal employees to do, didn't they?

Lots and lots of people knew that already.

The part of the story that never gets told is that 100 years or so ago, cocaine was considered a medicine. It wasn't super refined and concentrated the way that it is today. In the amounts used in the original Coca Cola recipe, it had about the same effect on a person as the caffeine in Coke does today.

Cocaine wasn't illegal, then, because it hadn't been converted into this deadly stuff we have today.

Many of our drugs are based on the chemical recipe for cocaine, including the Novocain that you Dentist mabye still gives you. By the same token, lots and lots of medicines are based on opium/ heroin, and we would be in serious trouble if we didn't have them.

IN the LATE 1800s Coke did have cocaine in it shortly there after the recipe was altered. The coca leaves used today are "spent" leaves - the leftovers of the cocaine-extraction process - however, one cannot extract cocaine out of the leaf at a molecular level; therefore, the drink still contains trace amounts of the stimulant.

Yes indeed, Coke-a-cola was invented first as a medicine, but many people overindulged in its use for two reasons, it tasted darn good, and it had cocaine in it. some genious decided to remove the cocaine but keep the flavor and walla...Coke-a-Cola was born. Good stuff!

Yeah. That's where the "Coca" part came from, because cocaine comes from the coca plant.

That was about 100 years ago. They used to put cocaine in everything. They figured out how bad it was later.
