Hello
Often (but not all the time) my girlfreind will develop stomach cramps after eating eggs, milk and some types of cheese and needs to rush to the toilet. Does anyone have any advice? Doctors have come up with nothing. She is also a vegeterian, would this diet contribute to this problem?

It the dairy products that she should avoid, milk, ice cream cheese... so on so forth.

There are two tests that your Doctor can choose from. The first is feeding the patient a Lactose rich solution and then taking breath tests for a period afterwards. Those who are lactose intolerant will present with Hydrogen in their breath.

The second test again begins with a fasting blood test, and a lactose rich solution, followed by another blood test. If someone is Lactose intolerant, then the blood glucose will not change after the drinking of the solution. A 'normal' person would show an increase in blood glucose as the lactose is broken down into glucose.

I manage an organic creamery, our cows are fed a 100% grassfed diet. FRom experience I have seen many customers coming in who had problems with consuming dairy products, but had no problems with ours. But also our milk has lactose in it. Therefor I contribute it more to the the diet of the cows. What the cows eat will effect the milk. People who are lactose intollerant should have a problem with all milk. Therefor I have seen a difference to people who are lactose intollarant and who are sensitive to dairy products. Aged cheese should have no lactose in it, cottage cheese and yogurts are very low in lactose and then you have the lactose free milk. Also there are some studies which could indicate that homogenization of the milk can increase sensitivity to lactose. My advice if you feel that she might be sensitive to dairy products, try to find a small organic dairy, so you know where the milk is coming from, and try cultured products first. Cultured products like yogurts and cottage cheese, the life bacteria are good for the body and the products are low in lactose.

Suggest she avoids foods and drink containing lactose as per this list and if her symptoms stop, lactose intolerance is her problem.http://www.annecollins.com/list-of-lactose-free-foods.htm
