Well, you don't have to hot curl it to have dry hair. Your hair is probably naturally fairly fragile and dry. A lot of hair treatments for this type of hair aren't very moisturizing, they tend to cover up the problem (they make the hair look shiny without it actually being healthy)
You should look into some products that are more natural, with things like shea butter, or other moisturizing fats and oils in them.
You have to baby your hair, it might just not be as sturdy as other people's hair.
I found a neat website about black hair care.
http://motowngirl.com/index.php
I was checking it out last week, and your question reminded me of it.
It's got some cool information in it.
Best of luck!

Grease is not good for all black hair. You should try oil and hot-oil treatments. The wonder 6 oils work very well on dry hair. Also when you shampoo and condition, try Motions Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I use it all the time to keep my hair soft and shiny!

if you have 'black' hair and it has length you are doing something right!!
what products do you use?
try using Mizani shampoo (it's for ethnic type dry , coarse hair). after rinsing the shampoo out towel dry. apply Mizani conditioner and leave on 3-5 minutes. rinse with cool water. leave in a little bit. comb out. blow dry in sections applying a staightening cream.
what ever you do , don't use products for white girl hair. no garnier. no pantene. no suave. these will ONLY make it dryer.
