What do you think? We've been looking at Toyotas but this one seems like a better overall deal. Also should we buy it loaded or buy after market leather, tint, etc. = dealer says after market is better quality at lower price. Saw a 2005 Eddie Bauer package with low mileage for about the same $ as the new standard model (still in warranty). Advice?

I just bought one about 6 months ago, and I highly recommend it! It handles great, has a lot of power and decent gas mileage. Mine is a base model, but has everything I need.
It can't hurt to do a bit of research to compare (I did)...read consumer reports/reviews. This car has a great reputation.

Yes the Forester is best in it's class as far as safety is concered it's the best. Beware of after market items if they cause damage, the Subaru Warranty won't cover the problems i.e. if you put an after market alarm installed by yourself or a third party and an electrical problem occurs because of it you won't be covered. If you have the options put in by the dealer before delivery and they are Subaru authorized then they will be covered under the vehicle warranty. If they options are installed after delivery they are only good for one year. What type of options were you considering? The Eddie Bauer edition sounds nice and depending on the mileage there should still be some warranty. The price should be very negotiable being that it is used and 2 model years old now. Good Luck!

we recently purchased an 06 Forrester 2.5X and have never been happier. Consumer Reports gives it the highest rating possible for safety and I've read that the insurance ratings people are suggesting to the other companies that their small suv's should meet the standards of Subaru.
The Forrester is made in Japan, and has to meet Japan's safety/quality standards which are MUCH higher then those of the US, gas mileage is wonderful compared to the vehicle we had, and nasty weather isn't a problem when it comes to driving. Subaru has a website that you can track your maintenance on and it informs you what maintenance needs to be done at a certain mileage...good for me because I never remember anything! And the dealer can configure the services to how much driving you will be doing...our first service was at 3500 miles and the next will be at 7500.
I always said I would never by a foreign made vehicle...but the Forrester made me change my mind

I have a base Forester. Get what you want from the dealer. The options can be discounted up to 50%.
Aftermarket items are not cheap and you have to provide or pay for labor of installation.
Aftermarket options add nothing to the value of your vehicle at trade-in.

Subaru Forresters are great quality, and good value for money. If reselling it is not a concern, i.e. if you intend to keep the car for years and perhaps drive it until it "dies", then aftermarket options are an option. If you intend to resell it relatively fast, then get a standard model.

Enjoy !
