There is a generally held belief that alcohol should not be consumed while on a course of oral antibiotics. This advice is correct if a patient is taking metronidazole, cephamandole (may cause a disulfiram-like reaction), and possibly oral ketoconazole (may cause facial flushing). However there is no contradication to the consumption of alcohol with other antibiotics.

Any medication and alcohol don't mix. If you do mix the two up you can either feel dizzy/giddy and collapse or feel sick. It depends on how much drink you've had. Another thing, the mixture is much harder for your liver to function to get rid of the toxins. So over time if you keep drinking with antibiotics your liver will eventually let you know!! A coarse of antibiotics last at the most 2 weeks, so whats the harm in abstaining til the coarse is over ??!

drinking doesn't lessen the effects of the drugs. However, alcohol can lower your general energy and delay your recovery so it is best to minimize drinking until you've finished the prescribed course of antibiotic treatment. (chronic liver damage from excessive alcohol consumption can affect the metabolism and toxicity of antibiotics.)

Despite a commonly held belief that antibiotics and alcohol don't mix, it is only necessary to avoid drinking alcohol when taking some types of antibiotics. These include metronidazole, cephamandole and oral ketoconazole. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist when you are given your prescription.

It will lessen or negate the effectiveness of the antibiotic. Give yourself a break and stop drinking while you're taking the medicine. You'll feel much better if you do!

alcohol cancels out the effect of antibiotics. you would just be taking them for nothing. in some antibiotics, it would cause nausea.
