Robert Kennedy once said: "As long as men are not free--in their lives and their opinions, their speech and knowledge--that long will the American Revolution not be finished."
It is wrong to think America is so selfish as to proclaim only her own freedom without concern for the universal rights of all mankind. Even so, the terrorists we fight today have no intention of leaving America alone. The very rights we stand for are an abomination in their fundamentalist eyes, and, while most islamic people may not support violence in enforcing religion, the insurgent/terrorist sects certainly hold to the idea of killing non-believers. People have a hard time seeing how actions in the middle east are in the favor of Americans, but that perspective is simply because, as Americans, we are naive to the hatred some people who have small amounts of power feel for those who are free and, even without authority, live a better standard of life than they ever will. Americans simply don't hate others' way of life in that manner. So yes, the conflicts we fight today stave off the resources of terrorists who would like nothing more than the utter destruction of America and her allies.
As to other conflicts, the Cold War is certainly an example of America standing against communist expansionalism... another movement which despises the rights of the individual in favor of the rights of the state. All the conflicts fought for the cold war were steps in preventing the spread of communist forces to American soil... and that's a key point: America has always enjoyed isolation from conflict on our homeland. It is better to fight skirmishes to protect our freedoms AWAY from home by getting involved earlier, even if this masks the way each conflict contributes to protecting Americans.

it could be argued that even WW2 was not for the sovereign freedom of America. Sure, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. And Nazi Germany declared war on America. Because the fight was not on American soil. So, we could say, that only the War of Independence and the War of 1812 are the only wars fought directly for the freedoms of America directly.
But, that is to narrow of a viewpoint. We have to ask this: Who helped us(allies) in those wars. The French, Dutch, and the Prussians(in war of independence). Later we allied with the British.
So, when including the ally issues. It is a "I scratch your back" kind of deal. Even though many times, During war it appears the govt does not have our best interest in hand. They do.
Look at the current War on Terror. 47 Nations in the Coalition which equals better political relations for all involved. And a move to a better world. 47 nations all say no to Terrorism. That is 47 nations fighting for not only their freedoms but, Americas and world freedoms.
So, what is Freedom. It is the ability to live life without fear or oppression of your rights as a human being. I believe as horrible as all wars are they need to be fought. To strive to keep this balance. All poeple deserve a form of freedom. Not nesscessarially Americas Idea of freedom. But, a freedom without fear.
One thing we learned from WW2 is you can not allow a tyrant to rule un-checked forever, nor can you allow said tyrant to attempt to rule with a steel fist.
Thanks

This can be a very abstract concept for someone outside the military, but anytime a soldier dies, even in training here stateside, he or she's calling was to contribute to keeping our nation free, or freeing the oppressed. The point is, that our nations military's tenacity can be deterant enough to keep us free. That being said, there are countless countries and situations where our Special Operations folks since WWII have fought on behalf of another country's freedom that we will never hear about. But the Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, The Balkans, Afganistan, Uzbekistan, and even Iraq.
"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. " -G. Orwell

In your opinion we have not fought for American freedom since the Revolutionary War. Every other war has been fought for land, to keep America one country, for revenge or for someone else.
We have to protect our GLOBAL interests. What would it do to our economy if we pulled out of Iraq and Iran moved in and said we now own the oil fields and you will pay $200 a barrel for oil. Our gas prices would shoot to over $5 a gallon and heating oil would be too expensive. That would cripple our economy just in transport costs to deliver goods to market. When fuel prices go up the prices of goods goes up. The manufacturers are not going to eat the costs, they pass them on to us.
We have no cost effective alternative fuels that we can depend on right now or in the near future.

We have not had a terrorist attack on our soil since we took THEIR war to their turf i.e. the middle east. They declared thier JIHAD on us and all non muslim nations (jihad = war), all wars are about OUR free way of life and the right to lay our heads at night without the fear of attack. Also we help other nations to become a Democratic society, which since YOU live in one you should know, is the best kind of society to live in. So keep using your 1st Amendment rights here on Answers and enjoy that freedom, cause it wasn't, or isn't, actually free.

Youre incorrect on the final section. Bush Sr observed the threats coming. Clinton grew to become into warned. Clinton did no longer something - even after the WTC grew to become into attacked the 1st time and the united statesCole grew to become into attacked on OUR soil and 17 militia lives lost on OUR turf. Bush Jr got here in and did some thing approximately it finally now everyones ragging his asss approximately it. somewhat unfair in case you question me... it is the land of threat and all people has the possibility to fail or be constructive...its as much as the guy and on how no longer person-friendly they desire to artwork or no longer. sure, there are diverse issues incorrect, yet we are a democracy...meaning each time we do in comparison to a minimum of a few thing, we are able to alter it. And, no...it wasn't a mogul who got here up with the word "u . s . a . of america, land of threat". It grew to become right into a foul immigrant who left the poverty of his u . s . with out thoughts who got here right here to discover that, in case you worked no longer person-friendly sufficient and long sufficient, you will desire to stay correct. And it nonetheless holds real right this moment. the concern is that there are too lots of people who would somewhat set back and whine approximately their lives somewhat of doing some thing approximately it.
