The Japanese invasion of China. The Roosevelt administration imposed an oil and steel embargo on Japan after refusing to halt military aggression against china. So the Japanese needed oil and south-east asia was the closest source. To secure the oil and open the sea lanes to Japan the Japanese needed to destroy the British base at Singapore and the US Navy base and army garrison in the Philippines. To prevent reinforcements the US navy ships at Pearl Harbor needed to be taken out.
The Japanese hoped that such a devestating attack would force the US into somekind of politcal settlement. It did not.

The emporor of Japan got a big head and thought he could take over. So on December 7, 1941, he sent planes to bomb Pearl Harbor Hawaii. It was early on a Sunday (I believe) and everyone was asleep. A lot of guys were killed. The Arizona still rests in the harbor. Part of a smoke stack sticks out of the water. It's a really sobering sight.
