I use Fedora Core 4. It was the 1st time I installed any linux distro and I thought that the install was very smooth. I also got it to dual boot XP and configure ethernet on it. The two things I still havent figured out would be the printer and video player.
Otherwise, I have never run into any issues.
I have heard good things about Ubuntu, but I think FC is a good choice as well!

Xubuntu, from the makers of Ubuntu Linux, is particularly designed for use on older desktops with constrained hardware. the only caveat is the laptop's BIOS firmware could be greater moderen than 1999-2000. sounds like XP. It does run as a "stay CD", so which you will try all your hardware earlier you attempt to place in it on your difficult stress. Get it here: FreeSpire Linux (sounds like Vista) is likewise worth a glance: FYI: I had FreeSpire engaged on a DELL Pentium III with 512MB of RAM, and an nVidia MX400 (and downloaded driving force), so 256 MB RAM would not be adequate. the two are surprising selections for "homestead windows Switchers".

I like Fedora. I suggest you try them all out. Install one, play with it see what you think, and try another. This will give you experience with multiple installs and you can weigh the pro's and cons of each. She will realize they aren't Windows though. They are very different, and don't run the same programs, without an emulator. Try Lindows for something that has the look and feel of Windows.

Ubunto.

Its the easiest to use distro I've ever seen...

Although I think Suse and mandrake are easy too...

I help distribute Ubunto if you want a copy...
