You may want to call your local police department to find out if they have an ordinance law on barking dogs. Might sound crazy but there are many places that do including my city. If a dog barks for more than 15 or 20 minutes The neighbors could get a fine for not controling there dog or disturbing the peace. How sad your neighbors can't be more respectful by just putting their dog in the house if it barks excessively.

I don't know about your state but here there are noise ordences that you can call and make a complaint if a dog barks for 10 minutes or longer. I also have a neighbor that has a german shepard that constantly barks. Good luck!!!! You did the right thing by going to talk to your neighbor. Now call the police and complain. Cotton in your ears may help. No sarcasim meant by the cotton idea.

Keep a record of the days and times you have visited the neighbors to bring the dog inside.
If they don't bring the dog inside after a reasonable number of requests, call the police. I'm sorry to say this, but call 911, so police will -have- to come to your door. Don't call the regular police line, otherwise you will get put on the back burner or given an excuse like "we're too busy" or "there are a lot of accidents tonight."
Keep a record of the times and dates you called the police.

You just need to call the police and/or animal control. Don't do anything illegal over a dog that is barking because it's left alone all night. It's not the dog's fault, it's the owners fault.

You've been doing the right thing so far and next you need to take it to the police. Maybe talking to other neighbors about the problem might help to get more people on your side.
Please remember it's not the dogs fault -- bad dogs are the result of bad owners...please don't take it out on the dog!!

When the barking wakes you up, call them on the phone and tell them ' your dog just woke me up' or 'your dog is keeping me awake' then hang up. Don't get into an argument. I think you have done the right thing and should call the authorities if you have more trouble. You could get creative and try to get the dog to go to sleep, lower a 2 litre plastic bottle filled with warm water, into his yard for him to cuddle up and get warm and/or give him a nip of brandy to help him sleep. Or you could just wear ear plugs when you want to sleep. Good luck.

File a complaint with your local animal control. They are listed in the government pages of your phone book under the "county" listing most likely. The guy will go out and discuss the complaint with the owner. He cannot say who made the complaint. If the folks don't comply in a certain amount of time, (I think 10 days) the noisy doggies go bye bye.......

you can make a complaint to the animal control
you said you asked the person nicely so its only fair he quiet his dog
and if he doesn't listen then its only fair to complain especially if you work if you complain more than once animal control will take the dog away
or suggest the man get a shock collar for his dog
I'm normally against those but when irresponsible owners refuse to keep their dogs quiets at 4 am then...
