afterall it takes millions of years for the light to reach us. Does this not contradict the Genesis account of the creation of the heavens and the earth?

oldguy, the latest telescopes have found new stars that are upto 13 billion light years away, which means that they started 13 billion years ago:

In his book, Science on Trial, Douglas Futumya indicates that there are only two theories that could be considered to cover all possibilities of the origins of the universe and of life. These are evolution and creationism.

Both Renquest and Scella (Supreme Court Justices) indicate that Creation Science is indeed science.

Now the scientific method has three major parts to it.
a) is it observable (Leading Scientists, both Evolutionary and Creationist, will admit that neither is observable)
b) is it repeatable (Leading Scientists, both Evolutionary and Creationist, will admit that neither is repeatable)
c) is it falsifable (In this category there is no test that I am aware of that is agreeable to both sides.)
Thus by definition, neither is either scientifically proved.
This means that at best they are not science but philosophies.
One says that God did it, and the other says that time did it.

Since there are only two divergent views possible, if you destroy one the other wins by default.

By the way your question is constructed, your motive is to destroy some of the foundation that creationists use. Now I could give a rebuttal that says something like this.

According to the current leading Evolutionary hypothesis, by the big bang, all matter, energy, space and time was "Created" at an instant. (Sounds like God did it doesn't it?) The particles spewed out, soon formed into hydrogen atoms. (The very complexity of atoms however begs the question of a Creator.) Now here is the problem. Hydrogen is a gas, and as such does not by itself join with other hydrogen atoms. Gravity is not sufficent to pull the atoms together. The stars that you are talking about. How did they form?

Two things in closing.

a) If a Creationist says"I don't know." you believe that you have won. So how was the cell formed? Please include the role of amino acids, protiens, DNA, RNA, the cell wall, osmoses, and all the other processes that are inherent to a cell. While you are at it explain how the cell survived long enough to replicate. In addition explain why sexual reproduction was needed by those first cells and how did it occur. If you say "I don't know." join every other evolutionary scientist.

b) I have found in almost every discipline, that when a person has a weak argument, they attack their opponent rather than the issue. Since my time on "Yahoo Answers", I have found that those that uphold the evolutionary philosophy belittle creationists in a ratio of about five to one. Does this mean that Evolution is a weak theory?

it truly is an exceptionally stable query. If our present regulations of physics are surprising, then easy speed is the cosmic speed shrink. Ergo, if a megastar or galaxy is a million easy years distant, it follows that the universe could be older than a million years. you're surprising. the easy from that merchandise might take a million years to realize Earth. Confusion is an atrocity. lamentably, i think of it truly is part of the human concern. I walk around at a loss for words continuously, and it truly is disheartening. i don't comprehend the certainty in terms of how previous the Earth and the universe relatively are. even nonetheless, that modicum in spite of the fact that, the Holy Bible does comprise metaphors. now and back, it truly is puzzling for college youngsters to examine which passages are to be interpreted actually and that are to be understood as being metaphorical. I applaud you for this query, because of the fact it truly is a cogent one, and expresses a valid and bonafide concern. yet what's the relationship between being a Creationist and determining the age of the cosmos (and Earth)? Do you advise to point out the ostensible certainty that the Earth is greater historical than some human beings might have faith, and, ergo, evolution is greater probable to be certainty relatively than 'merely' theory? back, i don't comprehend how previous Earth is. yet to be easy, I do have faith that the Earth is a lot older than 6 or 10 thousand years previous. yet for me, there's no undertaking in believing that the international is older than some Creationists would think of. To me, it would not conflict with the thought God created human beings in our present incarnation. yet to be easy, it truly is a stable counterargument against the belief of Creationism, presented that between the features of Creationism is that the Earth must be in easy terms some thousand years previous.

So you think you have us Christians in a spot now, Well afraid not, We can see stars that are million of light yeras away because in Gen. 1:1 In the Beginning, God created the heaven & the earth,2: And the earth was without form & void-------Therefore God created everything millions of years ago, Here is one Christian that believes in a prehistoric time frame also, & yes I have bible for that too. One thing you forgot to mention is that some stars that we see today, are not even there, Does that sound strange to you, Person of science, We are just now seeing their lights from millions of years ago, & it took that long for it to get to earth. So some stars as we look at them, they left that part of space a long time ago, we are only now recieving the light from it.

The stars you see are far away from earth millions of light years .
Their light comes through space many many durations ago. Somes you see are not existing at the instant you seeing. Cos their images take millions of years to reach into your eyes. And you cannot conclude the star seeing is there.

Stars give off a LOT of light. So,even though the closest star is 66,000 times farther from us than the sun and the amount of light that reaches us is thousands of times fainter than the sun,it is still enough to see. It is also 66,000 times smaller, and so just looks like a point. It is possible to measure the light coming from the sun and the stars, and it really is all consistent.
http://helios.gsfc.nasa.gov/qa_star.html#faraway

God created the stars as a source of light,so I don't really see how being able to see them light years away is inconsistent with the creation account. If anything, it shows just how powerful God is and how much attention He pays to exact detailing.

hey
just wanted 2 say logic does not work on people who believe in god. check out bill hick's work, he's a comedian frm austin texas usa and he is very funny but also knows alot about the foolishness of christian beliefs. the religion was started b4 science and explained everything. then once some people started to realise that the church leaders were just manipulating them so them could live the high life people wanted definitive answers and so started experiments as a way to understand life and the universe in a factual way that they could see for themselves and know it for fact. they were no longer prepared o accept the word of any1 else they wanted to prove it beyond doubt in front of their own eyes. thats why religion and science dont mix. it was easier for priests b4 we understood that a baby does not die because "the devil took it" but because of disease or sudden infant death syndrome etc. that std's and leprosy and black plague etc are not punishments from god but diseases and are not selective of who they kill. the grass used to grow because god made it now we know about and understand photosynthesis. this makes things very difficult for the church but they fumble along changing their tune each time they are proved wrong. i once asked one of those annoying preachers u get in city centres "where is heaven, it used to be in the clouds, thats what gos is standing on in all the old paintings. but that was b4 we could fly. now that we can where do you think heaven is?" at first his changed the subject and i let him a little cause i have to say i enjoyed watching him squirm but a steered him back and put him on the spot to which he said "well i believe heaven is at the edge of space" which in a way sums up the whole religion, they will try to get u to believe what they say. and when they are proved wrong they change their story and just keep telling you anything to get money and time out of u.
interestingly fundaMENTAList christian's believe that the world is 12,000 years old!! scarily george bush is a fundamentalist christian and as far as i know believes all the crap the say including that the world is 12,000 years old and was created by god in 7 days. they dont take it as a metaphor they take the whole bible for fact, for eg that the earth and the whole universe is 12,000 years old, and dinosaurs never existed cause they are not mentioned in he bible, they believe that god put the fossils here to test our faith!!!! people who are that brain washed and blind will no be susceptible to logic but i understand your frustration.

I am inclined to think that God made the universe complete as a mature functioning unit, so light would already be here. If what you say is true are there new stars appearing all the time as the light from stars from farther away reach here?

God created the stars but then Satan created the light from all stars more than 6000 light years away to make it look like they were many years old. Satan planted all the evidence we see for an old universe in order to trick people so they wouldn't follow Jesus. Satan knew if people didn't follow Jesus that Jesus would torture them in hell and he thought he could trick them all. Those of us who believe in the bible are much to smart to believe the lies told by satanic science.

Yes of course it completely disproves genesis. CLEVER believers can accommodate science, and see Genesis as allegorical, a rather nice myth to explain things which, at the time of writing, were mysterious. But unfortunately the fundies and creationists, well, they are "special"....

This is covered under the fact that God made adult people and animals. So He also made Million-year-old light.
We know that the earth was formed with age to give scientist dirt to dig in. The adult sand box. (Dee Dee Dee)
