I am going mad with all the talk of dieting after the festive season here in London.

The problem is that despite the fact that for years nutritionists have told us the best way to lose or maintain a healthy weight is moderation we seem unable to just do a little excercise, eat smaller portions more often and eat a little bit of everything.

What makes it so hard for us to change our habits? (Myself included)

Laziness.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes a level of commitment most of us are not capable of sustaining.

Folks can't stay married for more than 3 years. So ya can't expect them to stay committed to fruits and vegetables (especially when there's a McDonald's on every corner).

I think people try so many different diets because they are looking for the magic bullet of diets. They want something that is easy to keep up with and that takes off pounds rapidly. There is no such diet, so people keep trying different things. Or we try the same diet with a little bit of tweaking.

It sounds like the easiest thing in the world to simply take in a little exercise and to eat less. But we can't manage to do it as a people, we are getting larger every year. They make food cheaper and faster and better tasting. The food industry wants your money and doesn't give a hoot about your clogging arteries.

So how do we get healthier and drop these pounds? I don't know, if I knew I'd be a rich woman, lol.

You ask two questions that are very different. I will do what I can to answer both.
Why do people still diet? Well given diet = the food you eat. EVERYONE has a diet. The question is.. is it healthy or not?

What makes it hard fro ust o change our habits? Well that is the case for all habits. The definition of a habit = something that is hard to change. If it wasn't hard to change it would not be a habit.

I know people who kick smoking in a day. For them it is a will power thing. Then there are others who have brushes with death because of bad lifestyle choices and they still don't change. I think it is a question of choices. How determined are you to stick by your choices?

Habits are instilled over a lifetime. Food is often used as a substitute for what is missing in a person's life. And, if someone is attempting to make these life changes that you mention, and they're already 50 pounds or more overweight, then they would have to diet to get their weight to a managable level.

marketing of food and the fact that restaurants and the food industry are just giving (what they percieve) as what people want- bigger servings.

nobody EVER complains about too much food.
everyone ALWAYS complains about not enough food. even if its just in their mind and it was scientifically calculated to be the perfect nutritional amount for someone average sized...
you will still want to eat after you finish a normal healthy portion size.

thats the big problem that causes me trouble as a diabetic is resisting the tempation to go back for more even though I finished the correct amount I measured out for myself...

you have to give your body time to digest and process the food, and then the hormones that trigger hunger will stop kicking you to eat. The trick is to realize its in your head (well in your body) and it needs time.

Because like junkies and alcoholics we have an addiction to food. We use it to solve problems, be social, relieve stress,we even use it instead of talking to one another. We need it to give us nutrients. However, half of the junk food we eat has little or no nutritional value at all. Plus fat and sugar seem to be very addictive just like nicotene and alcohol and drugs. The media has a way to draw us to the wrong foods with commercials of cake being drizzled in chocolate or close ups of fast food burgers. It is everywhere we need to control our urges. Also when you eat a lot of junk food you have no energy to exercise. We need to fight this and get going. Think of a motivator to keep you going. Why do you want to eat right? Write it down and when you want to falter, think of your motivator. That is the best way I know.

If I diet, people will think I am below poverty line and cannot afford meals.
If Paris Hilton diets, people will term her a great philanthropist foregoing meals for the famine victims of Africa.
At the end of the day, it is money, honey.
