What makes you think that size matters? Sure everyone wants a nice engagement ring, but don't you think it means more when you pick it out yourself? Only you know what you want to do. Just do it.

For an engagement ring, I would not go with anything under 1 carrot. The size matters to some women, but some like my wife only look mostly at the quality of the stone. Whatever you do, don't try to pass off a cubic zircon. You can tell the difference. If I was you, since you are not looking to ask her in the immediate future, just take her to a mall and casually wander into a jewelery store and look at the rings and get some kind of idea what type of ring and size stone she is expecting.

Hey,
lol :D Umm...usually a high quality stone that is average size is fine. Like a friend of mine had five diamonds on the ring, as the engagement part, and when they got married four more were added (like a puzzle ring) so it was 9 average size diamonds. It was very pretty and she really liked it. So make the stone (s) high quality and not like tiny. I'm sure whatever u get her she will like, because it's u she wants more than the ring. :P
Good Luck! ;)

Solution: when you are ready to do this thing, pop the question -without a ring, or print a 'coupon' entitling her to one ring of her choice. Then, take her shopping! Let her choose. If she goes w-a-a-ay over budjet, be honest. I don't think she will be too upset - after all, it is like a test for marriage, which is all about give & take, and compromise. I would find this wonderful: to have a guy respect my opinion on what ring is best for me, and go shopping for it with me! Much better than getting stuck with a ring for life I don't like because I would not hurt his feelings (yes, there are MANY out there - you guys have no idea).
Good luck!

Well to be honest is really depends on the female! I personally was happy with my 1/2 karat with 100% clarity! Some females are more apt to want a bigger diamond but with less quality but seriously the clartiy will be what keeps the value of the diamond going down the road! If you are smart and if she truely loves you no matter what she should only care about one thing and that is getting to spend the rest of her life with you. My fiance' told me that he only got the 1/2 karat now but plans on getting a 1 carat for our 5th wedding anniv. Sooooooo that could be another option!

Metal type being what, platinum vs. gold or silver vs. gold or? If it is a precious metal, (gold platinum) then I would answer carat size, but if you're talking fake gold vs. real, then I'd say the metal or her finger may turn green from the ring. And... I don't know about the rest of ya'll, but I would say the clarity of the stone is more important than the carat.

i think a simple yet elegant ring will be good enough. DONT get a large stone with lower quality. more importantly, set the mood for the proposal. itll make the moment much worth cherishing than the ring.

I was going to answer this but for some reason I am lead in the direction of advice and let the others answer your question.
Be sure you can afford it. If Dawn truly loves you, that ring is going to be perfect simply because it came from you. I am the Mother of 5 adult children and although you didn't ask for advice, my best for them was " NO CREDIT CARDS" Good luck on your search.

Get a middle-quality stone and a medium size. Also, make sure she'll like the shape and the metal in which it's set. Some girls prefer gold over silver, and vice-versa.

hiya.. since you're a guy you probably won't have read this book by Trinny and Sussannah.. anyway they have found that big rings don't suit all bone structures - it apparently won't suit her if she has small bones (ie the knuckles are thin and delicate no matter what size she is).. in my opinion i think that big rings look tacky and would much prefer a smaller ring :) they look classier and don't take ovr every outfit you own! so go for a small more expensive one.. and if you guys get married i hope you have a great life together x
