You have to know the fundamental principle of flying; Bernouilli's principle. It is a consequence of energy conservation. The energy of a volume of a fluid is the sum of a pressure term, it's kinetic energy and potential energy. As the speed of a fluid increase (more kinetic energy) it's pressure decrease (conservation of energy). On an airplane wing the bottom is flat while the top has a curve. The distance traveled by the air over the top of the wing is greater than that traveled in the same time by the air under the wing. So there is a positive force acting upward on the wings caused by the different air pressures.
