I have a 1 1/2yr old cat....real loving and would lick you to death. When I have people over he is the best cat in the world, lays there and looks at you (like most cats) except recently. I went away for 2 weeks on vacation out of country and had a friend, that my cat knew very well, come in to feed him and take care of him while I was gone and my cat attacked him! He has never done this to anyone, not even my 2 young daughters!!
Any advise on what I can do besides putting him in a shelter for the next trip I plan?

HI
Maybe get someone else and introduce them to the cat before you go on your vacation. Have them get familiar with the new sitter long before you go and hopefully she will be use to them and not attack them Some cats are great guard dogs so just make sure they are bery familiar with each other. I hope this helps.

I think the cat was probably just upset and stressed out that you wasn't there for him. Have you ever been away from your cat for 2 weeks before? I'm sure he was very happy to see you when you got home from your trip, I think I would just mention it to your vet, they would probably have the best advice. I would also recommend keeping him at home when you take your next trip like someone else mentioned. By putting your cat in a shelter could cause him to get kennel cough or other sick germs.

Cats don't detect people so much by sight, by rather by scent. Perhaps your friend had come from a place that day where he picked up other scents that over-powered his own to the cat. (Clinics, restaurants, etc.) Next time you go away, leave an article of clothing out with your scent on it, and also one of the person who'll be 'watching' him. This should alleviate his stress level. Don't take him somewhere totally strange for the duration of your next trip. You'll max his stress and perhaps being putting him (unwittingly) near a sick cat.

maybe he got frightened by something
i was at a shelter once and i picked up a cat a very loving cat and all of a sudden she freaked and scratched the crap out of my hand
maybe your kitty felt threatened if it happens again maybe you should consort with a vet to see if he has any anxiety issues or anything like that otherwise it could have just been accidental

Your cat probably thought your friend was going to steal him! My cats know my parents very well, but one day I needed my dad to let himself in to take one of them to the vet - and she hissed and clawed at him. She's normally so docile that you can pull her whiskers and everything - she doesn't even use her claws when she PLAYS with you. So yeah - it's a case of "Does my mommy know you're here? I'm not supposed to accept sweets from strangers!"

~He's watching the house for you, how sweet! Not so sweet for the person trying to care for him. I'm sure he misses you.
Maybe you shouldn't go on such long "vacations?"~

Cats are strange creatures, he's probably mad because you left him. Talk to your vet about it.
