average(x,y) will give the average of numbers
if (test, onTrue,onFalse) allows conditional processing
count(a,b,c) counts the numer of celss that have values
max (a,b,c) returns the largest value in a list
pmt(rate,nper,pv,fv,type) allows calculation of payments for a loan

in excel
right from where is says "A1" and under the spell check button in the top left corner there should be an "=".
click on it.
the word "average" should be written on the newly added menu.
there should be an arrow indicating a drop down menu, click it and there are about 10 different formulas and you can click "more functions" for a bigger list of formulas...

It has some brilliant minds that solve problems (for free) in 10 minutes. I've used them for the last several years and they are excellent.
I've never seen a problem that one of their experts didn't have a solution
