I do I do!!!!!!! Temperament is the dogs basic personality.
Learned/Trained behavior is what the dog has been taught or a behavior developed due to its environment.
A watch dog will alert and a guard dog will defend. AM I Right???? Huh?
Hey Tyke, Where's my little gold star for the day? Isn't this basic elementary level stuff?

I think I do!
I would say that temprament is part of the nature of the specific dog. It's just how the dog is. Learned and trained behaviors are ones that people or the dog's environment have conditioned into the dog. These learned/trained behaviors are not necessarily good ones.
Watchdogs keep an eye on things. I have a watchdog. He'll even let me know when someone comes to the door. But guard dogs will protect as well.

LOL to the asker... St Lady is not the only right one... I am too LOL. But thats ok. Guess the answer had to be short enough for you to know its right... or you asked only to have people to criticize... grinz.
Beyond that, there is a link between temperament and training and these roles. You seem to have failed to see that. Scarey that you did not know that. ML?
But then I thought you needed an answer. Not that you were just checking who knew in the fewest possible words.... You did not get it right... lol. Happy New Year
Ok, for the first part of your question. As briefly as possible, temperament refers to personality and disposition that a person/animal is born with. Learned or trained behavior, on the other hand, is simply that. It is the way an animal/individual learns to respond.
To take it deeper, read about Pavlov's experiments in psychology about making a dog salivate when he rings a bell. When the dog learned that a ringing bell meant food, soon all he needed was a ringing bell to salivate. Classic learned behavior. Check my first link for information on that.
As far as watchdog vs guard dog; it appears that many use the term interchangeably. However, to be accurate, there are in one experts words, "Four roles of dogs":
WATCHDOGS ...mobile, four-footed burglar alarm[s]. [They] bark insistently and steadily when an entry is attempted, and ... [go] to the entry point to pinpoint it for you... (can be TRAINED or TEMPERAMENT)***
PROTECTION DOGS are animals with advanced obedience TRAINING. On your command, they will bark and lunge at an aggressor, snapping at him without actually biting him. Also upon your command, they will immediately sit or lie and fall silent. Their TRAINING is oriented strictly toward a deterrent show of force; if your attacker persists, the animal will have to fall back on its natural protective instinct and bite him. A properly TRAINED protection dog will also perform all the functions of a watchdog.
ATTACK DOGS have been TRAINED to sink their teeth into people on their master's command, or when they observe their master under assault. Once resistance from the suspect ceases, a true attack dog will let go of him. It will do the same on command, no matter how excitement-charged the atmosphere, if it has been properly TRAINED and selected. Normally, the dog will only bite if given the proper command, or if the animal sees its owner or a family member under attack. (HMM... it mentions if properly selected and trained... a mix of TEMPERAMENT and TRAINING)**
The attack dog is at the maximum level of obedience TRAINING. After the master has ordered it to put a suspect on point, the dog can be called back, and even ordered to "make friends." It feels no personal animosity toward the person it is ordered to attack; it is a canine technician, doing a job on the orders of its human boss.
GUARD DOGS represent the deadliest level of canine TRAINING. These animals either walk with a sentry, or patrol alone in an enclosed space. Their function is to apprehend and neutralize any human intruder. They do not stop biting when the suspect stops resisting; they stop only when the human stops moving. They are likely to be TRAINED to go for the throat or genitals. Guard dogs are TRAINED to kill and maim. A guard dog is so vicious that it will usually obey only a single handler. ... The only legitimate use of a guard dog is in wartime, or when guarding an area so sensitive that human intrusion could result in awesome public danger, such as a nuclear weapons facility.
The link to this information comes last.

I know the difference but it has already been written down. I do not think many people know the difference. You know they blame the breeder when the puppy has problems because you know it could not have been anything they have done or not done since they owned the puppy.
You are not really surprised by the lack of knowledge considering all the ridiculous questions that are constantly asked. Then again I guess it is surprising that with all the info available that people still do not bother to learn and still try to treat their dogs like children.

Pavla's Law give the dog a treat after the task is completed successfully..........That is "trained"
Reaction to stimuli, would be learned, if the dog is treated in a decent manner more than likely the dogs will like the attention, therefore his temperament will be good. As for most animals (including humans) if you treat them badly they will not seek attention in the same way therefore, their reaction is not a positive one, their "temperament" is sort of defense.

Yes I do. This is why I can't give up on my lhasa. His bitting is a learned behavior to protect himself. He lived on the street and was h*ll to catch but I have now realized he isn't bad he was only trying to save himslff. His true temperment is much more like a little puppy and sweet as can be. He will roll on his back in our arms and chew on our fingers with little love bites. Loves to play with toys and balls now that he is more comfortable but he does still show fear in his eyes sometimes.
Learned behavior I can help them learn new behaviors where as a dogs true temperment is a born inate behavior that is much more difficult to re train.
Added:
Sharon its pavlovs theory not law. And he rang a bell for the dogs as stimuli not affection or treats.

there is a difference and i think it is:
temperament is basically your god given ability's,
and learned behavior is trained by another person.
and a watchdog will protect your house while you are gone or at home,
and a guard dog will protect YOU.

HI
Even though a dog has been breed for a certain job doesn't actually mean he will automatically do it. Some traits are born instinctively but sometimes you have to train them to inculcate it in them better and to make them they way you desire. Hope this helps.
