If you go through the time and effort to apply makeup, I would hope someone would give you a compliment for the effort that you went through. If you don't normally wear makeup, then wearing makeup to see someone would give some indication of how special that person is to you.
You did chose the right point. It is your sister's in-laws. Which means they are not family. You may look familiar to them, but they still have no clue who you are. It sounds like someone that places more emphasis on how you look on the outside than who you are on the inside. I suggest you take a pragmatic approach.. . Give praise that he is not your father and have a little sympathy for his wife.

I always like seeing how beautiful women are without their makeup. You can't wear it all the time.
