It depends on how they say it. Once I gave baby clothes to this 1 year old. She's a bit bigger size (or the clothes too small, I don't remember) so the parents politely ask me whether I can return the clothes and get the bigger size. I think that was very reasonable.
If you have given a lot of thought to the gift, and the receiver returned it without considering your feeling, then I would say that's rude.

That is why many retailers ask if you want a gift receipt! There are always going to be finicky recipients. This person won't be the last person in life you meet like that. Whether I would be insulted or not would depend on why the person gave me back the gift and in the manner that they did it. There is an expression "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." There are reasons why this old saying is very relevant in today's modern world.
See if you can get your money back or save the gift and give it to someone else for a future occasion.
Find out if there is anything your friend would like. In the future either ask this person what they would like or get them money or gift card at a retailer you know they shop at.

The only person who has done that is my brother who wanted me to exchange his gift for another gift $100 more expensive. I think it is extremely rude and hurtful. It's also very selfish.
I don't eat sugar products but I have friends who give me cookies and cakes for Christmas. I would never think of rejecting these gifts. I love these gifts the same as anything else I have ever received. I am able to share the cookies & cakes with my friends and family who visit my home during the holidays.
I certainly think it is very rude !!!!

Incredibly rude! One year my daughter gave one of her grade-school teachers some gourmet chocolates as a Christmas gift and the teacher actually told my daughter (who was in the 4th grade at the time), "I don't eat those". But she didn't give them back so I don't know why she went out of her way to point that out to a 9 yr old who was only trying to make a nice gesture.
My mother teaches middle school. She is highly allergic to perfume and many of the gifts she receives contain potpourri or scented candles. She never turns up her nose or makes negative comments, she accepts them graciously and then offers them to my aunts or to me once she takes them home.

I had that happen to me once with a birthday gift I gave. It was a basket I made up with different kinds of soaps and bath goodies- all color coordinated, put it together myself. It came to me via the birthday person's sister(she didn't have the gall to face me in person). To make matters worse, I never got an explanation as to why it was returned to me.

No, but that would solve any future problems of buying them a gift, or even inviting them over. The open bottle of face lotion is really the pits of ANYTHING I'ver ever heard!
