Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get a clean polyeurethane finish on wood? I've put four coats (Minwax SG using "China Bristle"?? brush) and sand between each. The finish is fine except for all the bumps. The last coat was put on in the Dining Room (whole 'nuther story there) with the doors closed for 24 hours and STILL it had a bumpy finish; as if I'd done it in a dusty environment. The furnace was off and the doors weren't opened after I left. Is there a better way to do this?? I like the sheen of SG (and even high gloss) but it's taking away all the pleasure of building wooden projects. Any help would be very much appreciated.

It sounds like the varnish itself has small lumps, maybe unseen, in it. This does happen with old varnish. If you have some cheesecloth to run the varnish through to get these out.

Look closely at some on a piece of wood, in the bright light, you may see them, like little lumps of gravy you get before using the sieve.
Either take this can back, filter it or buy a new can.
