When a child or anyone for that matter has a virus, cold or flu should you get a new toothbrush after every cold or just rinse the toothbrush with really hot water? Any suggestions would be great.

A mouth is riddled with bacteria -already-. You really don't want to know what's sitting on a toothbrush. Just keep a separate toothbrush for everyone. Because you are living under the same roof, you are going to be breathing the same air, and probably breathed the cold or virus germs a long time ago (or got them off of the table or dirty kid's hands). You want to change a toothbrush when the bristles start getting frayed and no longer are effective in cleaning teeth. If you have any questions, bring your toothbrush (in a ziplock bag) to your dentist and ask if it is time to be replaced.

Unless the toothbrush is old then wash in hot water. Generally toothbrushes are meant to be replaced every 6 months.

We put our toothbrushes in the dishwasher every time we get a cold. You should replace your toothbrush every 3 months.

Its recommended, but I can see how that can be a pain since kids get sick more often the adults. You can always get some alcohol, pour it in a glass, then dip and leave the brush head there for a couple minutes. Take it out then wash it off really well. Any bacteria should be gone then.

If you have to pause for thought err on the side of caution and buy a new one.
Remember that boiling or using disinfectants on a tooth brush could damage the brush and reduce it effectiveness at cleaning your teeth.

Well if the toothbrush is new and you really do not want to throw it away, you can soak in in mouthwash.

Hot water is not a disinfectant, get rid of the $0.99 tooth brush and simply buy a new one.
