A 1.5 in. blade will not give you enough penetration to reach all the internal organs. I think from the research done it was found that you need to penetrate at least 2 inches?

I carry a Balisong (Now Benchmade) Butterfly Knife with a 4in. blade that I've had since I was a kid because I can use it like a Kuboton first and as a last resort I can open the blade. I feel naked if I don't have it on me when I go out. I won't go to places where I know I will be searched for weapons.

I've never had to draw it because I don't put myself in situations where danger may present itself. The last time I was in a real fight was in High School many many years ago.

I do pull it out a lot when I'm hanging out with my brother-in-laws (Filipino) so we can see who has the sharpest knife or to fool around and play knife fight with the blade closed. I've been sliced/stabbed/killed in those mock fighting senerios numerous times to know I never want to be in a knife fight EVER!

Here is an interesting video on knife defenses w/ graphic photos of people that have been victims of knife wounds:

first off, while many people here do mention the legal aspects of carrying a knife, they fail to realize that a 1.5 inch knife IS LEGAL in every state I'm aware of in the U.S.

also carrying it for SELF-DEFENCE is a legitimate answer. However if you are the type that is looking for trouble (or look like you are) you will get hassled. If you are carrying it with the intent to cause trouble, then you have trouble.

I would suggest you learn how to use it, true a knife is a very easy weapon to learn and easy to use even for someone not trained in knife-fighting. If I were you I would learn to use it, AND learn the legal ramifications in dealing with a situation where you HAVE to use it for self defence in your state.

A good start would be, after there is an altercation where you have used it and BELIEVE YOU HAVE BEEN JUSTIFIED in doing so. that you call the police yourself, you place the knife on the ground and stand on it before they get there. You explain and do not appear violent. I would reccomend telling them you want to cooperate in any way you can but are too shaken up by what has happened and speak to your attorney.

Yes this sounds like a lot- but the simple fact is that you will talk and say something stupid that will be used against you. People think cops are going to be talked out of something, they are not, they are interviewing you to trip you up in your statements.

Simply saying "I was attacked and defended myself" should suffice until you have spoken to counsel, they cannot force you to speak.

Not the best of ideas. First off with a blade that small the damage will be barely more then an attack with your fist or a good kick. Second, legally you are then going to face lawsuits and possible prison time even though it was in self defense.

The answer btw, but please, please, please don't ever use it, is either the eye or throat. Either of those can cause major bleeding injuries that will kill a man and usually stop him dead (literally) in his tracks. Some may also say the temple but with a blade that small it will more likely break against the skull when you miss the temple (since it's a small and moving target) and the blade can snap back and hurt you. A safer but more legal place, but please still never do it, would be the stringy spot between the calf and the heel of the foot. That's the Achilles tendon and if cut will make standing hard and attacking even harder for anyone.

Are you a guy for a girl? I've been having the same thoughts lately. I would recommend a martial arts self-defense if you are only thinking of a knife- knives are only good for very close up, and what if you can't get to it, or what if your attacker uses it on you? Or what if you forget it? If you are gonna go for such close combat, try Krav-Maga (sp?). That way, they can't take a weapon from you, you always have it. Also, if you use a weapon on someone, you could get sued or a criminal charge against you- which will only bring you in contact with more violent people.

solar plexus (center of the chest) or underneath the armpit. be warned this stands a really good chance of killing someone, and you will be arrested for it, self defense or not. they will bleed to death if they dont receive immediate medical attention. also a clean swipe across the stomach can immobilize most people.

i use a folding snap-knife with a 1 inch-exposed removable boxcutter blade. i recommend this instead of normal knives as it is EXTREMELY sharp, and if it gets dull you just replace the blade. cuts made by this knife are easier to stitch closed since it slices so cleanly. (gotta think of the other guy, right? lol)

addendum to the anti-violence advocates:
the idea that violence is never the answer is just naive! it's a harsh truth to accept but VIOLENCE SOLVES EVERYTHING. it may not be the best way to solve something, but one way or another, violence solves the problem. people who advocate non-violence are saying you should not defend yourself! afterall, self defense could be dangerous! o.0
sorry for ranting, it just gets me all worked up when people say that defending yourself is wrong. :-/

Carrying a concealed knife is not a good idea. Not only can you get in serious trouble if questioned by local authorities, but if you do actually attack some one with it (even in self-defense) you could possibly kill someone, which would obviously put you in VERY serious trouble with the law. Better option than carrying a knife is to take up a self-defense class or a martial art such as Aikido or Judo, which are more defensive than others.

hmmm....this is tough. you can't exactly pull a knife, cut a vital area and expect no legal ramifications for it. you can't exactly pull a knife and cut anywhere for that matter and expect no legal issue. "i wasn't thinking"..."i lost my mind and just sliced"...."i just wanted to get away"....these things can help in those situations.

if i was to want to carry a knife for protection and look to use it in a life-threatening situation i would definitely practice taking it out from wherever i have it on my body. you'd be surprised what adrenaline can do in that kind of scenario, so i'd want to make a reflex of pulling it out.

when someone sees a knife, most people who still consider atatcking you will most likely want to take the knife away from you. targets like the solar plexus, throat, eye, etc may be very very hard to reach....especially if you don't have martial art training and don't know how to throw fakes or be deceptive.

with that said, my most likely target would be somewhere very low on the person's body. the quad, the knee, the calf, the ankle. most people think "high" with fighting. going low is seldomly considered.

i would practice getting in a very very low stance so that these targets are easily availlable to me and so that i "disappear" from the attacker, if only for a split second.

i would also practive moving in a very very low position as well, because i'd never want to stay still in any life threatening situaiton. i would drop, cut and move in one motion.

i wouldn't stab, i would slash so that i still can use the knife if i need to. pulling a blade out of a body isn't cake, so i've heard.

i would run the first chance i have. i'm not looking to slug it out. cutting the leg may inhibit the person from following me as quickly as they'd like, which will get me to safety easier.

as you see, just carrying a blade is far from providing protestion in itself. you need to train for that scenerio so that your body does these things without you even thinking. there's no time to think...especially if the situation is so grave that you need a knife.

but a last few things. if you are a woman, you need to be aware of your surroundings. that is the most important ingredient to self defense. you also need to feel comfortable shouting out a situation that you feel is becoming dangerous. scream "get away from me"...."someone help me please"..."police". attackers don't want to mess with someone who will put up a fight.

a prime example is the boston strangler. he would only prey on those who didn't put up a fight. many woman think if they stay quiet and obendiant, the attacker will take what they want and leave. the women that put up a fight against him he ran from, as being a married man he could't be caught with scratches on his face.

remember, do your best to be aware of your surroundings. make a game of it. try to do it for 5 minutes at a time. focus on being completely aware of what is going on around you. what you see, what you hear, what you smell, what you feel. this doesn't mean looking all around you in a frantic frenzy. it means being relaxed, but alert.

i hope you never need the knife.

Not a good idea. If you pull a small knife, chances are someone will pull a larger one - or even a gun - and kill you dead.

And if you ever get checked by the police, you'll get booked on charges of carrying a concealed weapon.

Violence is never the answer.
