It's larger than i expected and i'm having difficulty getting used to it. It's on my lower back and i designed it myself - not off the wall!
I took a long time deciding to get one, but i just think it's slightly on the large size (rougly the palm of my hand). I'm off traveling in a few months, and basically the tattoo is in reference to that as it was a massive decision to go. Anyone else experience mixed feelings after first tattoo? (i'm female, age 22).

first tattoo is usually hard to get used to for me it was my 3rd and 4th after I got it I was like OH MY GOD what did I do.. I'm going to be a grandma with at least 4 tattoos but after I got over the shock I was fine I LOVE all four of mine and when I have another baby I'll get another one (I have one with my son's name) and be careful they are very addictive my mom went in for her first tattoo and the tattoo artist said okay when should I book your next one and she laughed and said she would never do it again well when I went for my first she came with me and got her second and when I went for my second my aunt came with me for her second and when I went for my 3rd and 4th (got them done the same day OUCH!!) my aunt came with me for her 3rd .. and you sit there in pain saying ouch I'll never do this again and a few months later you totally forget how much pain it was and go back for another one ... you will get used to it and it's a little late if you really hate it because it is their forever just relax like I said at first after my 3rd and 4th I was kinda regreting them but I got them back in august and I love them now the tattoo artist did an amazing job.. my poor friend leah got a tattoo of curious george on her stomach and 5months later found out she was pregnant and she just showed me all of her stretch marks and her tattoo looks awful now... good luck just breath you will get used to it and probably want another one just think the next one thru more carefully...

Not once did I ever regret my first tattoo. Nor my second. And I highly doubt that I'll regret the next one I have planned.

Sizing a tattoo is always a little tricky, as the tattoo needs to be large enough to show the detail work (a tattoo that is too small for the details involved will turn into a muddy mess over time). When you consulted your artist, he should have explained exactly how large the tattoo would be to have it look good, and then once the stencil was positioned, you would have had a chance to look it over for size and placement. That would have been the time to make any corrections or changes. A tattoo also needs to be in proportion to the body part where it is being placed. A hand sized tattoo is not a very large one for a back piece.

Being that the tattoo is extremely new, you are very conscious of it. It's like getting a radically different haircut where you spend the first two weeks trying to decide if you like it or not. As time goes by, you will see the tattoo more as a part of you. I'm not quite sure how the tattoo would affect your travel plans unless you are concerned at the reactions of people. If you wear it with pride, you'll find that people generally will respond favorably to it.

Your first tattoo is always the most difficult to grow accustom to. My guy had his first one about 43 years ago when he was 10. He has had several since than. I on the other hand got my first when I was 39. I can tell you that I was a bit frightened. It stung for days and it is in a bit of a conspicuous position on my arm, so I was a bit nervous. But, once it healed I don't even think about it until someone complements me on it.
Tattoo's are individual and they are a permanent part of who you are. Give it some time! Don't let anyone tell you you are not uncomfortable with the burning and soon to be itchy colors on your skin. When all is said and done it is an outer expression of who you are. You are a strong individual who expects a lot out of life and wants more. Show it off with pride and be who you are!

Good Luck with the travels
Blessed Be

I tend to feel that if you think your tattoo looks larger than you expected that this may be a perceptual thing. It's something a lot of people regard as a big step, and this may make it seem bigger to you than it actually is.

If you haven't done so already, show it to one or two trusted friends, and ask them what they think about it. If they say, "Oh, cool!", maybe it's time to stop worrying. (Given the location, you can cover most or all of it with clothing most of the time, anyway.)

I also wonder if the tattoo looks larger because it's tied in with a major decision. You might want to look at how things are going with your decision to travel, and how you feel about that. I am NOT suggesting that you put your travel plans on hold, just that there may be details you need to look at. For instance: if you're going somewhere where you don't speak the language, are you working at learning the language? Or are your studies coming along a bit slowly? [I get the feeling that your travel involves work, rather than simple tourism.] Are you worried about finance, or personal safety, or whether you will be up to the job?

Good luck, and try not to worry.

A&d has a drawing effect so don't use that at all. quit picking at the tattoo and the artist should have gone over the after care with you. It will be shiny for awhile since the skin is healing and new. You might want to try a different non scented lotion on it if it is that dry and wrinkly looking. Personally I have used H2ocean on my tattoos and have had no issues with them. I have also used aloe. The H2ocean is a cream that is designed for the care of tattoos and piercings. The peeling is the scabs coming off that is normal. I have 18 tattoos and none of them are very small so I do know what I am talking about. The foot is almost constantly in motion, socks and shoes don't help the healing process either since they rub anytime you move your foot. If you are that concerned about it ask your artist for the best advice. I can only tell you what works for me and my husband.

Well did they put on the stencil before they started tattooing you? Because you should have known how big the tattoo was going to be before you got it...

Either way, I have 15 tattoos. And whenever I get one that's easy for me to see, it still takes me a little while to get used to it.

If it's what you really wanted, then you should love it. If not, then I'm sorry to hear that.

Just give it some time. I'm sure everything will be fine. :)

Your first tattoo always takes the longest to get used to because it's something new. It took me a few months to get used to my first tat. But I now have 4 and plan on getting #5 soon(in memory of my grandparents) I know alot of people that say the same thing about their first tats. Don't worry, you'll get used to it in no time.
Hope this helps and happy traveling!!

i have never regretted the size of a tattoo. the first tattoo i got last year was supposed to be about five inches by seven inches and ended up being about nine inches by eleven inches and i am so glad that it was. i'm sorry if you are having doubts about it. but what's done is done. embrace it. maybe it's a sign that where you're going will be a big adventure?

I am going through the exact same thing...i just got my first tattoo last night! I gave it a LOT of thought and consideration (8 years) and designed it myself so i love the design and meaning. BUT, i am just sitting here daydreaming at work thinking...."oh my gosh, i actually did it, i can't believe it." - i'm freaking out a little bit. Everytime i look at it in the mirror (on my back too) i instantly feel better and love it even more. i think we'll get used to them, especially since we didn't make rush decisions.

Yes I experienced mixed feelings after my first one. As far as I was concerned it was too big and didn't quite seem to 'sit 'right'. I ended up getting it covered over over in Polynesian style black work done by a traditional artist.
