partial paint and some stained(?) w/clear finish - unsure of finish type

wiseacre answer: very carefully.

frankly, if you are trying to preserve the home, call a pro a home of that vintage might have lead based paint, well frankly it most assuredly does. the clear finish is shellac or varnish. shellac will dissolve with denatured alcohol. varnish requires other strippers. Try Safe-T-Strip. non toxic and reusable. yes reusable you simply move paint, stripper and all from a portion of the stripped part to the next unstripped part. so long as it is wet, it will still work.

Use a paint remover or call a professional. This is a yucky job, not to be undertaken by the fainthearted. I'd call a pro and Ive been stripping and refinishing furniture for over 30 years.
