"Smudge" is an otherwise healthy, happy, spoiled , neutered, loving cat. He looks like he has some sort of disease that causes hair loss! He licks himself constantly...removing the hair himself. He hasn't got fleas, and our home is clean & nice. We have another female cat that is fat & healthy. I am embarrassed at the way Smudge looks! Help!

TAKE HIM TO THE VET! NOW!

There is obviously something wrong! You souldn't be embarrassed by the way he looks, you should be embarrassed for not taking him sooner!

Sounds like your poor cat is just itching to death! It is probably a simple skin condition that can be cured by a quick visit to the vet. Since he doesn't have fleas it could be an alergy to something else. Have you started using a different laundry soap? Maybe he has something intestenal. A quick visit to the vet ($25) and a shot ($15) or some meds ($15) and Smudge will ge ever so grateful to you for helping him out.

PS - once the condition is cured his fur will grow back quickly.

it is a skin condition and should be taken to the vet. even if you see no fleas, that doesn't mean he didn't get bit by one and have flea allergy dermatitis. i have a cat w/ that, and we use advantage on him year round. something in it soothes his skin and keeps him from (not licking) yanking his fur out. however, you should take smudge to the vet to make sure it's not something more serious, such as a fungal infection.
