German Shepherds are direct and fearless, eager and alert. Bold, cheerful, obedient and eager to learn. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage. Calmly confident, but not hostile. Serious and almost human in his intelligence. They have a high learning ability. German Shepherds love to be close to their families, but they are very wary of strangers. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. German Shepherds have a very strong protective instinct, so they should be extensively socialized to prevent over-guarding when they are an adult. Aggression and attacks on people are largely due to poor breeding, handling and training.

Rhodesian Ridgeback is ferocious in the hunt, but in the home it is a calm, gentle, obedient, good dog. Good-natured, but some do not do well with children because they do not want to be pestered or played with roughly. They are intelligent, cunning but straight-forward dogs that are loyal to the family, have something of a mind of their own, are brave, vigilant, reserved toward strangers, and possess considerable stamina.

* I prefer a German Shepard myself and all dogs try protect their family, it' s just a matter of can and can' t.

A guard dog.. I'd go with a German Shepherd Dog.. or a Great Pyranese. Both are noted for fiercly protecting what they consider to be their people and their property. The grooming both require just serves to reinforce the bond between you.
If you're looking for a 4-footed alarm system.... but without the size.. A Pomeranian is a nice alarm. They are fiercely loyal and nothing gets by them.

I have to agree with the above answer, Dobermans are absolutely the best! I have two and they are always on patrol, but they are also very affectionate. They are indoor dogs and need to be part of the family. They don't shed very much which is great for people with allergies like me.

These dogs know the difference between invited and uninvited guests. My father, who my dogs know very well, let himself in the front door one day. My male doberman growled and barked and stood his ground. He would NOT let him in the house. I sent my dad back outside and this time I let him in, after that my dogs were fine and back to loving mode. Did I mention that they are very smart.
Another time we took our male dog on some errands with us. We met a friend who when saying goodbye to my husband gave him a friendly punch in the arm. My dog, who had been absolutely friendly before that lunged at the guy and probably would have bit him if I hadn't had his leash. They protect their owners, its in their blood.

I hope these stories help you. However, whatever dog you end up getting, I would strongly advise obedience training. This will help you build a bond with your dog understand your dogs behavior, and also help with socialization which is a must.

Realistically, I can't think of any breed of dog that wouldn't protect their home if someone was breaking in (as long as the dog was part of the family, and lived in the house).

Getting a dog for the purpose of "it being a guard dog" usually ends badly. People want a dog that will be "mean" to people, and be aggressive towards strangers, and they inevitably end up getting rid of the dog because it snaps at them or a family members coming to visit, or ends up, in fact, biting someone.

Doberman Pinschers are great guard dogs and more than likely when the word is out that one lives in your home they would not even attempt to come in your house. They are also very affectionate and loving to their owners. I have three, have had them for years and haven't even locked my doors for years. When I leave the house and even go to bed for the night my doors aren't locked. Good luck on which ever breed you choose.

A properly trained guard dog Will attack who ever you tell it to. Even those that live with you. They will do as commanded by their owner. It is difficult to have a guard dog as a family pet because a guard dog should only listen to one master.
