There are many Muslims who do not practice as they should, but that is their personal choice. Many men wear gold when gold is reserved only for women. Many men and women alike smoke, drink and do not pray. Just like Christians, there are those who are more pious than others.

umm if you are Muslim you cannot be atheist or agnostic.
You are a Muslim only if your profess and sincerely believe
"There is no deity worthy of worship except for God and the Muhammad is the last and final messenger"
See the problem is that people confuse the fact that Islam is a way of life, not like your ethnicity that you simply inherit. There are practicing Muslims and obvious there are ones who are less practicing. Does that make them non-muslims, only God knows whats in their hearts.
God had told us if we repent sincerely and abstain from our bad deeds we can be forgiven. The only sin we cannot be forgiven for is not believing, or associating partners with God.
I have even read a saying of the Prophet that said, if a Muslim man were to live an evil live for his 70 years but his last deed was to write a fair will God will grant him paradise.
Another important saying is "Would a mother throw her child into a fire?"
God is even more merciful than this, all you have to do is believe in his oneness (Islam) and try and do some good deeds and repent for your bad ones.
Peace Be With You

one isnt necessarily muslim, just because his parents were muslims.....a muslim is some one who follows the five pillars of islam(believing in one God and His messenger,Praying five times daily, giving charity, fasting during the holy month of Ramadan and performing the major pilgrimage known as Hajj once in a lifetime if he's able to do so..) and has faith in Allah,His Angels, Books, Messengers, the Last Day and Fate...A true muslim is one who doesn't drink, eat forbidden food, do shameless acts. A true muslim is one who's supposed to respect his parents, spouse, relatives etc., one who seeks useful knowledge, one who's peaceful...You may ask that if this is so, then why aren't all the muslims you've seen or heard of like this..and hence in answer to your question, no, not all 'muslims' are necessarily muslim....

I live and work in Saudi Arabia and count many Saudis as my friends. I have asked this question and they all hold religion as their most important love above all else including family and politics. They each are very curious about my own beliefs and accept there are differences and are quite happy for this to remain so.
Some follow their religion very closely and others follow in their own fashion but all hold firmly to their religion as a top priority.
Peace from a Buddhist...

That's like saying there's an athiest Christian.
It also makes answering your question hard as both YES and NO applies.
I know many Americanized Muslims and they don't wear head gear, don't bow 5 times a day and don't always say PRAISE BE UPON HIM when saying Muhammad or Allah.
Does that make them unreligious? Probably not, just ultra liberal.

if you are a Muslim you must believe in GOD and no one beside him. you must believe in one faith
and not atheists or agnostics, we believe in one GOD and qur'an is from GOD. and our prophet Mohammad is the messenger from GOD to all Muslims.
