which best platform would a corporate look in for java

When a programming Language becomes Operating System independent, choosing OS becomes more confusion. Java when compiled is 80% of the machine and 20% of the machine when the program is executed. So is the ByteCode.

If your word "best" indicates to the performance of the Java application on specific operating system, then, go with Linux, while comparing the OS architecture between Linux and Windows, the execution is faster in non windows. And as of JVM on windows OS, that is an add on (lately) which become as an additional layer. But for Linux its like a framework, It executes upon it. So Linux is listed first.

Note: The performance between two OSs depends on the application size and code written. For some application the execution speed may result one and the same. But for mission critical application (like handling with external connected machine) may vary and speed difference can be seen.

This is just an overlay.

Hope this helps.

Linux and Windows run java the same. Most developers use some version of *nix. Be it Mac, Linux or Unix. But Windows will work just as good. Your preference.

Java is a separate Platform and it has nothing to do with the Operating system whether it is windows or it is Linux.
Java works very well on both operating system. Just check Ur system with additional RAM 256 Mb + recommended and o/s speed more than 500 MHZ.
Java will run very well.

ENJOY.

Java is platform independent. Nobody chooses Java first for development and then operating system for it. Corporates choose OS as per their own preferences or for their own reasons. Whatever is the OS, Java will work same on it.

If a corporation is looking at Java, it's possibly because of the porting freedom, i.e. avoiding locking into linux/windows. Presumably you want to compare JVM performance?
