add eggs to cold water that has 1 tbsp salt in it (the egg doesn't absorb the salt, it is used to help make it easier when you need to peel the egg). bring to a boil and cook for 14 minutes. immediately place in a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. they turn out perfect every time! (no green/gray ring around the yolk) and the shell comes off without taking half the egg with it.

That depends on how done you like your yolk cooked. A standard recipe for hard boiling an egg is

Start the eggs in cold water. Bring to a boil. As soon as it hits a boil, cover, turn off the heat, and let them sit in the hot water 10-11 minutes. Immediately then rinse them under cold water to prevent over-cooking from carry-over cooking.

This will give you a solid, but not overcooked yolk.

Hard boiled is a misnomer. You want them hard cooked.

Start with eggs directly from the fridge. Cover them with cold water, and bring the pot to a boil. Turn the burner off, cover the pot, and remove it from the heat. Let it sit, untouched, for 10 minutes. Then drain the pot, lightly crack the shells, and start peeling. Your eggs will have yolks that are cooked through but still creamy, and they won't ever have a discoloured suface. The whites will still be tender.

in a full boil, i've read about 12 minutes. but you have to immediately cool it down after the 12 minutes or else it will still cook inside...then the yolk will become brownish..which isn't bad, it just looks bad.

depending on what altitude you are at about 5 minutes for a semi-soft egg. around 6 to 7 minute for a hard egg. don't overdo it tho as the yolk will become powdery.
