ANY conviction for as felony means you no longer can purchase, own, or possess a firearm. A felony would be any offense that has a punishment of 1 year or more in a state prison.

If this person has been to prison, that means that they have been convicted of a felony. Therefore, they can NEVER own or possess a firearm. Nor can they have access to one. Such as a spouse or family member with an unlocked firearm.

It is automatically a felony for a convicted felon to possess or own a firearm, and would result is additional prison time.

Also included in this would be certain misdemeanor offenses. Such as domestic violence related crime and specific drug related offenses. Some of these have time limits and could expire within a few years of release. But felonies never expire. That, unfortunately, is a label that will always apply.
