It is always recommended that you wash your face at least twice a day with a mild face wash. The best preventative product to use is benzoyl peroxide. 2.5% benzoyl peroxide may be the most effective concentration, however, it is sometimes hard to find a product containing this minimal amount. It is more common to find the maximum strength 10% dose. This dose should work just fine if you cannot find the 2.5%. Apply twice daily about ten minutes after washing your face. This will allow the face to dry and your pores to close, causing less irritation to the face.

I have an acne treatment that has won me the best answer better then fifteen times. Often, the person who voted it the best answer was amazed at how well it worked, even those who had severe cases of acne. I'll copy and paste it below.
Use a hot compress on it, and then use cool water to close the pores. Do the process over and over again, about five or six times. Use soap to wash the area, and then treat it with an alcohol soaked cotton ball. It should be gone within five to six hours.
Here are some of the previous comments I got from those who voted it as the best answer,

If you haven't used proactive before- try it... it works well for long term skin care, but as for right now- if you just ran out of your favorite face cream put a dab of toothpaste-yes toothpaste on your zit when you go to sleep. It sounds crazy but toothpaste actually dries it out and makes it go away virtually over night. For the day time "Boo Boo Zap" by Benefit (sold at Macy's and sephora) works well too it's a liquid so you can put it on during the day and no one will see, and it's safe to put on underneath make-up.

If you have sever acne than I would see your doctor. There are several treatments such as Vitamin A acid and Acutane that can control even the most sever cases. You may also have something that is not simple acne, and needs more specialized treatment.

Old method:
Wash your face several times a day with anti-bacterial soap.
If you feel an oily sheen on your forehead, then it is time to wash.
