Yeah, me, too. Seriously, do not judge yourself by this society's understanding of education. What most people know about how to teach and learn is WAY WAY prehistoric and downright harmful, totally medieval. For example, what we consider "attention deficit", is actually "accelerated" thought in many people. Some people can think MUCH faster than most people. That doesn't mean that they are "smarter". It just means they are "faster on the up-take" than most people are. BUT, they LOOK like they aren't paying attention, or, that they are slow and stupid because they usually whiz way ahead, for example, like in a classroom lecture because they CAN and because they are bored. But, when the teacher calls on them, they don't have a clue where the slower thinkers, the "normals", are, and they look stupid or absent-minded. My father use to say to me that I was twice as slow on the up-take as most people but that when I got done digesting the same amount of information as other people, I could DO twice as much with that information as most people could. But, our stupid educational methods aren't sophisticated enough to, on the average, to recognize and assist and properly teach thinkers who can DO something with information, only those "normals" who can MEMORIZE information. The way we are teaching today rewards the people who can only collect information, not apply it. Also, how we remember things and store them in our memory is not well known yet at all. And, what psychologists have learned about memory in research is not learned very well by teachers and people who run schools. For example, research has shown that people can learn Calculus BETTER if they don't use a blackboard, computer, pencils or papers, but, instead, merely listen and recite and hold it all in their heads while holding hands in groups of about twenty-five while slowly moving in a circle! For real! Another example of how far behind our educational methods are is, we learn to read by reading words in a line, left to right. But, even toddlers can learn to read almost instantaneously by seeing words displayed on a screen this way: One word, the SAME word displayed at the same time in each of the four corners of the screen. Just ONE word, shown in all four corners at once. THEN, the NEXT word shown like that. Then, the next word, shown in all four corners. The speed of how many words can be flashed on the screen and how many we can read starts to go faster and faster until we can read a hundred times faster that way than the old way. And, guess what? We REMEMBER more that way. And, that's just one or two examples. There's a flood of problems in our school's educational methodology. We remember only 3% of what we learn in schools today. That is not YOUR fault. That is backward educational methods. What I reccomend is keeping stress down (retention goes DOWN as stress goes UP), eat more protein (memory works better with more protein on board), get 8-9 hours good sleep, try to find a trick, like re-writing notes or reading books aloud (everyone has different brains and different BEST ways to store information. You have to find those ways for yourself, the sooner the better.) and talk with your school counselor. He or she has GOBS of good ideas and may want to test you to identify things such as "accellerated" thinking, or brain tumors. (totally just joking there.) Good luck.

Make sure that you always eat something for breakfast, it is proven that this helps you perform better in class than if you skip a meal. Also, try a few brain excercises, crosswords and number puzzles will help improve your mental dexterity. When you want to remember certain facts, try to visualise them as vivid pictures in your mind, the brain remembers pictures better than written words or numbers.
Dont worry about it too much, all teenagers have the concentration span of a gnat. It's natural.

I had this exact problem, you are probably an independent thinker and like to learn things for yourself. I think you might have to consciously learn to trust some authority figures (or at least give them a chance). It is also possible that you are not interested in the topics being taught at school. Try finding something about the topics in school that sparks your interest. You also might have a memory problem in which case you need to take detailed notes about everything so you can refer back to them. It is also possible that you are overly hyperactive. Try calming your mind by staying away from sweets or caffeine. If all else fails, try going to a doctor and going on medication.

i have have a hard time paying attention too. some tips is to chew gum. that is if you are allowed to. in my high school you are allowed. i don't chew gum, but i know it works (for some people) because my friend has ADD, and it helps her. or, have something in your hands. avoid thinking something TOTALLY not related to what is going on in class.
well thats all i can think of at the moment. make sure you eat enough, and just try as hard as you can to pay attention! if nothing helps, maybe go see a doctor, or talk to a counselor. they might be able to figure out something that can help you.
i really hope that helps!

You may have ADD.. Go see a doctor and he may prescribe some sort of an amphetamine which can help you concentrate..
If it doesn't seem like much of a problem, try some caffiene before class. Caffiene can help people concentrate and organize thoughts better..
Just a suggestion

You might have like ADD or ADHD. My best friend has ADD and the doctor gave her medicine for it because she can't focus at school and stuff. SO maybe, go to the doctor and check it out.

For school, consider taking notes in class. Do you get enough sleep at night?? Or maybe go to a doctor.
