COnsidering what they have to put with with from our shoddy and incompetent government I am surprised that they ahven't staged a coup as yet and arrested Blair and co for Treason!
These weasels should be totally ashamed of themselves, but they don't have any shame that is why they continue to send our tropps to war without the basic armour that they need to defend themselves and to fight a war, provide them with shoddy living accommodation, pay them peanuts and yet bend over backwards to please the worlds unwanted that have moved here!

Well it's not a four star hotel. No matter where they are. But some of the bases are rather nice. I had some nice barracks rooms when i was a Joe. Some of the folks i know who are married have some rather nice housing.
It's not the best out there, but it is done by the lowest bidder.
As far as being down range or in the field, sure troops don't live in luxury. You would be surprised how nice our sleeping bags and cots are.
Soldiers didn't sign up to see all of the holiday resorts of the world, and the army makes sure that it doesn't happen.
I never minded. I liked all of the places that they set me down. Most were nice. Some were not so nice.

if you are talking about british troops and the recent reports on the news. i think it is a disgrace. that the barracks have been left to get in such a mess.
although the trooops themselves have a lot to answer for as the outgoing troops should have made sure the accomodation was left habitable (clean and tidy, and in a good state of repair) when they left. if the accomodation needed maintenance then contractors should be brought in or a special decorating and maintence squad should be established if they do not want to pay contractors. we have the man power in the armed forces to set up (or use the royal engineer) a squd and train them in home maintenance so that they can do the work themselves to bring the places to the same minimum standard as required for domestic rented accomodation.
as the government (the armed forces) is the bigest landlord in the UK should they not be held accountable to the same standards as a private (or local government/ council) landlord?
afte
in private accomodation the landlord has a bare minimum standard to uphold. such as basic maintenance as and when reqired. but it requires the tennant to contact the landlord to arrange for repairs.
the guys and girls in our armed forces deserve at a minimum the same standards that is expected when in private accomodation.
edit folowing reading "privatres" entry yes the media has rightly got it's teeth in the issue. and yes the lack of equipment on the front line especially is an embarasment. the sooner we get both issues resolved the better. when an employer provides accomodation especially in their own country that accomodation should be to the highest standard availalbe.

Havent they just finished building the first Private Finance Initiative barracks in the UK?
I dont agree with the principle of PFI, but those barracks look like a very reasonably good modern housing development.
As the article I've linked to states, thee barracks are "state of the art" and cost £12bn. Id say things are looking up for MoD accomodation.

Accommodation is fine but the media has got its teeth into anything relating to the armed forces ,while it is a high profile issue.
However, the provision of equipment and weapons compared to american forces is nothing short of embarrassing and is potentially demoralizing to our army.

Newsflash. When you sign the papers, you are government property. Low grade "accomodation" is part of the job description.
I had a single, green canvas pup tent and a trench tool when I was in.
Get over it, it isn't college or living in a dormitory. Part of the job is carrying your equipment and personals on your back or the back of a truck and possibly sleeping under the stars. FACT.
Anyway, sugar, when you're being shot at, the last thing on your mind is whether or not you have clean sheets.
Join up, my friend, then complain about it.

I'm not that aware of it - I only know one Solider, and he isn't happy with his accomodation, so it would seem that it need improving.
Would welcome any sources of information on soldiers acccomodation you can provide so I can have a more informed opinion :)
But my initial thought is that if its anything like how we treat our soldiers in all other circumstances, it won't be good enough.

Soldiers have to do it hard, thats is their job.
Unfortunately the Bagdad Hilton was booked out and the Paris Hilton was filled up with seamen,LOL.... so they had to go motor inn.
Soldiers need to be mobile and ready to move at a moments notice so accomodations are not always celubrious. it goes with the job
are they there to do there job or have a holiday?

My husband is living in a tent which is constantly flooded with water he has to sleep on mud which i consider to be horrid .His kit is always getting wrecked and he has to share a tent with lots of guys .. That is expected in theatre but not having to scoop mud out of the tent .We have been in iraq for some time and they deserve decent accommodiation not crappy tents

Saw this on TV this morning. Showed dirty baths, showers and tiles falling off walls, and soldiers complaining about accomodation.
Errr, who didn't clean the bath/shower? Who broke the tiles? Its not like they are forced to go there, they are paid quite a good wage in the army. You would have thought hygine was one of the components of basic training.
Like the rest of society people are out for somthing for nothing, and the army is no different.
