Any suggestions? Oh, and if you happen to know, how much would the air fare on a a budget airline cost, flying from New York to these cities? Thanks!

Okay...well I guess I will have to defend Montreal...
Geeezzz...guess were you find arrogant people! Well I don't have to bullshit about other cities to prove to you that Montreal is your best choice!
First Montreal is the closest (just over 1 hour flight), it is a beautifully city with a European feel, it a multicultural city and majority of the population is bilingual ( outside of Montreal is mostly french, but in the city everyone will answer you in English guarantied and yes we are polite :) )
Montreal is much more affordable you can stay in the heart of downtown for a resonable price. The quality of life in general is cheaper here than anywhere else in Canada, so you can get more for your money.
We have amazing restaurants and the night life is to die for (that you won't find anywhere else for sure!).
If you like to ski, there are many slopes from 20 minutes to 1 hour from downtown where you can go and if you have the time to get out of the city more...Quebec City is 2h away and it is one of the nicest city in North America (I wouln'd spend more than one day there, it is very beautifull but small so in a day it's perfect...and people speak English there to as it is one of the most visited city here.)
So there you go Montreal as soooo much to offer, here are just a few of the things you can do here:
Montréal's Old Port
St. Joseph's Oratory
La Ronde amusement park (summer)
The Botanical Garden and Insectarium
The Biodome
The Montréal Museum of Fine Arts
Notre-Dame Basilica
Pointe-à-Callière Museum of Archaeology
..........
You can also check out the city's web site for more stuff to do:

You can have round trip tickets to Montreal and Toronto starting at 325$ and Vancouver starting at 465$
Have a nice trip!

Aamir H's answer seems the most sensible and accurate for all these three cities.
I do not want to get 10 points for any "best answer", but to help you a bit, especially since you've seen some debate about language and attitudes, if you go to Montreal with respect, they can be polite and very helpfull. Excusay moi, or Bonjour ! and Merci ! etc... If you sincerely try to say something, anything ! in French, they will usually respect you back, and speak English with you. You'll be alright.

(And certainly don't worry about Quebec separatists bombings, that separatist strategy happened in mail boxes in the 1960's, 40 years ago, and it stopped totally and completely since the year 1970.)

If you go to Montreal, you could easily do a side-trip to Ottawa with a relatively cheap bus ticket on a Greyhound or Voyageur bus or Pacific Western bus. I think its 1 1/2 hour ride there. You could go on a public tour of Parliament, that's something special to see. Also, you can get inexpensive gourmet meals at an awesome bakery / delicatessen at Boulanger Francais, in "Bytown" (five minute walk from Parliament). You could go across the bridge over the Ottawa River and see the National Museum of Civilization. Even just seeing the architecture on the outside is something to see, as well as the stuff inside. You could see Montreal and Ottawa. You'll see some special things for sure.

Toronto is my city, and yes its the most similar to NY, so if you want to see something more different, other cities may be more interesting.

Vancouver is a beautiful place to visit, but very far and if you go in November, its in the rainy season. This fall and winter, Vancouver has had a lot of bad luck with weather, rain storms, floods, snow, mud slides, extreme winds, with damage to their jewel, Stanley Park. Maybe in a couple years or so, it'll be nice again for visitors, in the summer.

They're all pretty different cities so really what are you looking for in a vacation?

Vancouver is the most scenic of the three, Toronto is the most cosmopolitan, and Montreal has the most flair.

If budget is a consideration then you probably will have to forego Vancouver for now, airfare will be really expensive as it is so far away. If you don't mind spending and like doing outdoorsy stuff like skiing, hiking etc then Vancouver is for you.

If you want a vacation that feels the most unique then you should head to Montreal as Quebec is the most European spot in North America. You'll find a lot of people speaking French (don't worry though as everybody there speaks English as well and is very friendly to tourists). Plus Montreal is the most reasonably priced of the three spots.

Toronto is my hometown and is a great city. It's got great museums, theatre, a whole bunch of great neighbourhoods that are really fun to walk around (Chinatown, the greek area, the Italian area, Little India etc.), plus a lot of nature too (Toronto islands are a good way to spend a day). There's always something going on too.

Montreal and Toronto are both great in terms of nightlife.

If you want to catch sports games then Toronto has tons of sports teams. Everybody loves the Hockey Hall of fame as well. Toronto gets a ton of concrets too.

What time is your vacation anyway?

I haven't looked into airfares for you but Vancouver will be the most expensive as it's the farthest.

I was born and raised in Toronto and I've been to Manhattan... I have to agree with Superfly that it's the city that will most resemble NYC, but is that what you want for a holiday ? I've only been to Montreal for 2 days and it was ok... back in the 80's and back then the retail store I visited would not answer me as I spoke English. Maybe things have changed ? Anyway, Montreal has a slight bit of a European feel to the city which was nice and a few good clubs for beer and jazz.

I grew up a city slicker but I got used to Vancouver very fast :) It truly is a beautiful city... and no snow down low (usually only stays on the ground a couple days at most). If you plan on seeing the 2010 winter Olympics then save your money until then to see Vancouver as prices for tourists will skyrocket during that time... or come see it now and save :) Mountains, nature trails, whale-watching tours, ocean-side cafes, Asian food galore :) and you can hop on a ferry and go to Vancouver Island or even Seattle as a side visit.

Cheers.

With its hill foundation and urban beaches, Vancouver has the rightly earned trustworthiness of being one of the very most beautiful cities on earth, with hotelbye you can have the opportunity to see this unique city. One of the places you'll need to see in Vancouver could be the Downtown Vancouver. Downtown Vancouver is brilliantly found on a peninsula in the Strait of Georgia bounded to the south by the delta of the Fraser River and to the north by a heavy fiord hitting much inland. Here you may also begin to see the often snow-covered stages of the Coast Mountains. Stanley Park is one of the most visited parks. Is just a rich Peninsula Park of huge woods adjoining to Downtown Vancouver. A flat seawall way encircles the natural space, and most readers take some time to investigate on foot or by bicycle. Inland, the park offers a lot of things to complete, and guests may invest a full time discovering attractions which range from the totem poles at Brockton Point to the west coast sea life at the Vancouver Aquarium. Spectacular opinions really are a common through the entire park.

Toronto definatly

Montreal is filled with a bunch of arrogant french ***** who dont like english speaking people

If youre into nature and mountains and hippies ect, Vancouver would probably be appealing

Toronto would be the city most like New York, and would be the closest, so probably cheapest to fly to, Vancouver being the farthest would cost the most

Visit Toronto, we actually have things to do up here :P

and oh yes, the french are VERY VERY nice, espically when the FLQ were bombing us because they dont like people who speak english!
and the french are such lovely people, more then half the provice of queerbec wants to seperate from canada, because they are intolerant pricks who are prejudice against english speaking people!
we just love the french up here :/

The paying for is gorgeous, seek the Eaton's centre and you will understand what i'm speaking approximately, besides the reality that i'm particular you have heard of it. no longer purely that however the entertainment district is lots exciting! great for a night out dancing/ingesting/despite you desire to do. there is likewise Canada's Wonderland it quite is a would desire to ensure, between the suited entertainment parks in the worldwide. there's a ferry which will take you over to Toronto Island besides it quite is pleasing.
