I knew a beautiful intelligent wonderful young lady who having danced since age three, at 14 was about to sit her dancing teachers certificate and she trained so very hard and one morning woke up unable to move her legs...

A trip to the hospital and an examination of her spine showed she had suffered spina bifida since birth and the strength of her tummy and back muscles had pretty much held everything together for so very long.... then the disease reared its ugly head...

I did hear later she had regained the ability t walk and was not sure she could ever return to dancing..

it was very sad..

There are two types...Spina Bifia Vera and Spina Bifida Occulta.
You are talking about vera which means the spinal bone hasn't fused at birth and all the nerves are exposed which is dangerous.
These people have to take extra care in life because any additional pressure in their low back can cause paralysis.
I see many patients with spina bifida occulta and they are normal and wouldn't know they had it if we hadn't taken xrays.

Yes I have, I have spina bifida. Spina bifida is one of the most common severe birth defects, historically occurring in 1 live birth per 1000 births.

As a result of my spina bifidia I have an abnormal curvature of my spine, foot and leg deformities, coordination problems, learning problems (including difficulty paying attention, problems with language and reading comprehension, and trouble learning math.),loss of feeling in my body, and other symptoms.
