It definitely is. It is sometimes hard to find the mechanism that produces a certain effect. But you can find statistical correlations because some cause and some effect. You just have to do it right. If you don't do it right (mathematically and statistically right that is) you should better not do it at all.
This question is like asking: does experiments help in physics? You should see that throughout history some of the most important discoveries were made by accident or experiment.

There is a benefit to having statistics in medicine. When you wade through all the clinical trials and research journals, one can appreciate the methodology. Also, a doctor can analyze the research and see if the study design was done well. My background is epidemiology and biostatisics. When I look at the studies coming from acadamia, I can see if research was valid or just some half-hearted attempt to keep a professor's tenure.

lets take a look at where statistics apply. in order to tell how good/bad a doctor is you look at there statistics. a good doctor has a high percentage of success why? because of statistics he first looks at the patient are they high risk or low risk statistically? if their too high risk a good doctor will let a statistically "bad" doctor do the high risk procedure because he does'nt want to make his stats look bad. you see? so instead of getting the best man for the job you get the worst guy for the job because theres a low percantage for success.it's a paradox. thats just one example of statistics in medicine ill think of more and get back to you.
