I know this is not really relevant but I highly advocate getting rechargeable batteries. They are so much cheaper and go on and on and on. You can even get solar powered battery charges for them! I live in Hackney and here they take them in our green boxes. It may be worth checking if your council do the same, and if not put pressure on them to do so. Alternately, carry them around with you and next time you are in Hackney borough for any reason just drop them in someone's green box!

Here in the colonies, you can take them to a place called Radio Shack. However, they only take Ni-Cd. I don't think the normal lead-acid batteries are recyclable.

i live in lancashire and my kids school are collecting batteries to recycle i there is a local school near you they may do the same no harm in enquiring

apparently some dixons/curry's shops take them to be recycled. you can also write to your local council and ask them to consider it. the more they hear about recycling items, the more they should think about it.
