Why not break up Iraq into three counties that share oil revenue? It appears that Sunni, Shi'ite and Kerds do not want anything to do with each other. So why not help them gain their freedom? Why don’t more people (Americans) state this universal ethnic need of autonomy?

If only it was left up to the “Iraqis”? I remember at the beginning of the War Bush stated adamantly that he will not break up Iraq. (Someone please confirm this?) Therefore, “Iraqis” had no choice because of Mr. Bush! Please read Wikipedia about Iraq and about the Kurds. Let me know what you think? It is very interesting. Thank you all for your responces.

This is a great idea, at least in teory. The kurds already have much freedom in their areas. Distrubution of oilmoney could be transferred trhough un. But there is a few Ifs added to this problem. What would Turkey and Iran say about such a split? Turkey have vaged a civil war (or almost) against a kurd country in their land so I think they dont like a kurdish neighboor. Is there areas in the country with large number of minouritetes such as bagdad? If so, how to deal with them? But basicily, I support this idea. Johan

Won't work. The majority of resources are concentrated in Southern Iraq. There is no way to properly ensure an equal division of resources and rather than civil war you would have war between the new countries for control. The Iraqis are going to have to learn to get along, or kill each other to the last man standing, but there are no easy feel good solutions that are going to resolve this conflict.

Let the people that live in the area of land known as iraq decide what they want to do themselves!! If they want to have a fight about things then fine, it is not for any outsiders to dictate to them how they should organise their country! And dont any Americans or British start talking about civil rights or any of that nonsense, remember what ye did to the native americans and the irish to name but a few!!

The truth is it's not up to us it's up to the people of Iraq. They created their Constitution and they will decide what or if there should be separate states. We are there so that they settle in a peaceful manor. My advice to the Iraqis is to get along and respect each other. Don't get offended so easy. Life is give and take...

I agree with bryan, pretty much, his ideas were put in better words than i would have, but how could you equally divide a country with that kind of resource. The kurds would get screwed as they always have been, and be stuck in the middle between the sunni and shiites again.

has partition worked anywhere ever, think of Ireland think of India and Pakistan now do you want to have war besides there is a Nato member state close by that would fear the idea of a Kurdish nation and the problems it would cause to them that is one reason why at least one neighbouring state would not let such a thing happen.

It has my vote. However, the Turks do not want an independent Kurdish nation. The Saudis and Kuwaitis do not want Iranian enfluence to move any further west. The US administration does not want it as it would be an admission of failure.

Why not allow them to make that decision themselves?
