Because your body is trying to heal at night

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).

Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.

Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.

There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.

The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

It is happening to me too. In the daytime it feels fine. At night, it feels like someone is scratching my throat. I think this is because at night, our body starts to relax and isn't moving as fast and so that must cause our throat to hurt.

A person's immune system is weaker at night, after a person has lost strength being awake for 1X hours already. You may have a weak virus trying to take over, might be a good idea to rest a little extra to make sure it doesn't.

I always thought it was b/c you were lying down and your throat can't push downanything it is trying to drain as well when it is level with the ground. Maybe if you try sitting up at night? I'm not sure just an idea.

You already received some pretty good anwers as why it's that way. Now try to gargle with Listerine or a 5% solution of hydrogen peroxyde (already in that dilution sold over the counter at your pharmacy). Gargle deeply but try not to swallow too much of the stuff. It works!

Probably a combination of more sinus drainage and less distractions. Try laying on your side. I like the numbing throat sprays they sell, it usually will make you feel better long enough to fall asleep, especially if you're taking NyQuil, the only way to survive a cold :)

maybe you snore really badly and dry your throat out, or maybe you are allergic to something in your bedroom which irritates your throat, such as dust mites in your bed.

When you lie down your sinuses drain and irritate your throat. This is called post-nasal drip. This is why your throat hurts at night.

During the day you are drinking water or fluids, which help to soothe the pain. You also swallow more, which helps too. At night, your throat is drier which makes it more painful.

Don't let this condition go untreated.

Seek medical help, and if it doesn't get better quick, seek others.

I would be using amber colored listerine frequently, and make sure you have a clove of garlic per day.

Brush teeth frequently and rince with listerine frequently.

Hope it gets better soon.
