During the 50's and 60's tobacco companies where accused of increasing the nicotine content of cigarettes to make smokers more dependent. They soon stopped when this opened them to law suits from smokers who had contracted cancer.
Tobacco smoke is a complex mix of over 4000 different chemicals, and different processes in the curing of the tobacco and production can effect levels of chemicals.
Tobacco companies do add additives, moisturisers to prolong shelf life, sugars and flavourings like chocolate or vanilla to make the cigarette smoke more acceptable to the smoker.
There is a good link to the list of additives that tobacco companies can use on the ASH site below. Near the middle of the page is a list of each company and the additives that have been found in their cigarettes

Hardly any cigarettes have 'added chemicals'. What they do have is different tobacco types blended togther and perhaps a touch of sugar or licorice. The chemicals present in tobacco are due to the natural processes that occur when you burn organic matter. The only way to avoid chemicals is not to smoke. Brands like Native American Spirit are branded with the type of information such as additative free etc specifically to tap into a smokers desire to smoke something that is better for them. However, they don't say better for you and still have a health warning. If you can find the chemical composition of American Spirit anywhere you will see it is pretty much the same as any other cigarette. Lastly, American Spirit tastes awful as it doesn't contain any natural ingredients to 'mellow' the smoke. One thing to do try is Snus - A tobacco product that you don't smoke.

what are you after organic cigs?
roll your own... in 'taylor made' cigs there is a saltpetre in the paper to keep the cigarette burning. This is carcinogenic.. although so is tobacco...
unfortunatly there is no safe way of consuming tobacco, chewing, smoking or snuff will most probably reduce your life expectancy...
tobacco does not have added chemicals.

why, thats so funny !!
Cigarettes contain 69 cancer causing chemicals just through the process of burning and inhaling tobacco smoke.
and you're worried about a few added extras.
Thats like being concerned about the colour of the bullet you're about to be shot with.
