I am unconvinced it does work but can anyone help?

NO - it makes no difference.

It is an old wives tale -- and to be correct the spoon must be made of silver.

The fact is that the the spoon makes absolutely no difference.

You put champagne in lower case: it is important to understand that the story refers to Champagne -- i.e the wine from Champagne France, but in fact any wine made by the Champagne method works the same (but not cheap copies or coca-cola).

If you put the bottle upright in the fridge door the rising bubbles create a layer of carbon dioxide on the surface of the wine that seals the bottle and thus the bubbles are preserved -- whether or not there is a silver (or plastic)spoon in the neck.

But to get even better bubbles, use a purpose made fizz preserver.

And if you regularly have unfinished Champagne may I suggest buying half bottles? They are great when you want just 3 glasses (oneand a half glasses each)

It does not. this theory stems from French human beings recognize-how (which, admittedly ought to propose some problem in words of the bubbly) that postponing a silver spoon interior the bottle and mind-blowing it interior the refrigerator will help champagne to maintain its effervescence and extremely last more. this does not help. i have done some managed experiments, besides to three uncontrolled ones, and properly any remedy to help a bottle keep bubbly always finally ends up interior the bottle dropping it really is carbonation more desirable right away. the brilliant option is basically to drink the bottle. regardless of the indisputable fact that, at the same time as confronted with the unusual incidence of left-over champagne, basically placed the bottle interior the refrigerator with not something interior the neck. No spoons, napkins, screw caps or corks. it would probable not be as modern-day as at the same time as you opened it, regardless of the indisputable fact that it really is going to be larger than putting a spoon in it.

Appears not - however I have always done it and it seems to work, but could just be because I am expecting it to work! So if you can convince yourself, it will seem like it ;)
And it makes a nice jingley noise if the bottle is in the fridge door, when you open it :)

Mythbusters -
The spoon actually reduces the fizziness of champagne. In a blind taste test when compared to several controls (opened champagne, re-corked champagne and unopened champagne) both Adam and Jamie ranked the spooned champagne the lowest in terms of fizziness.

I know from direct experience that you can leave a half-finished bottle of champagne open overnight and it will still be very fizzy in the morning.

No spoon required. Of course it still works if you do put a spoon there, but that doesn't mean it works because of the spoon!

No, it won't do anything! I saw on Mythbusters that they tested with the spoon, with the cork put back, just left open and then a closed bottle. The one that had the cork put back tasted even more bubbly than the one that was never opened. Unfortunately the spoon didn't do anything!

Nope, a friend of mine did it even though I said it wouldn't work.
Are the bubbles tricked by the spoon into not exploding when the pressure changes?
The champagne went flat

Mythbusters did the test. It anything, the Champagne was better off without it.

it doesn't work. Neither does any other of grandma's tricks.
Champagne can not be preserved once opened. It has to be drank in one go. If not the bubbles wont last for more than a few hours.

We're such lushes that we always finish a bottle of bubbly, so have no experience of keeping it for the next day. It seems a waste!
