I've noticed that when someone is given a gift, they will say to the giver, "Thank you for my bracelet!" whereas I have always thought it was correct to say, "Thank you for the bracelet!"

Which do you say, and why? Is either more polite than the other?

definitely "THE"! "my" almost implies previous ownership. Like, hey, thanks for giving me back my bracelet. :-)

I always put ...thank you for the "gift of" (the bracelet) and then proceed to tell them how much I will enjoy wearing it.

And
You should also always ask for the receipt in case you need to raise ready cash.

"Thank you for THE [enter present name here]." or "Thank you for YOUR gift." Either way is fine. I prefer "THE."
